Correct imo. There was no synethitic oil around when these engine's were designed, Also with wear the thicker stuff will keep your comp in the right place when hot.
I know many will disagree, but I have well over 300k on my bottom end I have alway's used the same oil. Just change it when it start's going dark...

10/40 semi. I burnt so much in my old E30 that I used Halfords, haven't had to replace/top up my current one yet.

BMW use 0w on all enines, so im not sure if thick oil is such a good idea. However 0w will go straight through and old engine that hasnt seen a rebuild. I use 5W 40 silkolene as recommended by oil man.
The thinner the oil the more protection there is on start up surely

Haven't changed the oil yet since I bought the car in February - its still fairly clean so don't see the point just yet. Always used Castrol stuff in the past.

Just had my 325 convertible serviced, it has only 40k on the clock and only 3 owners. Garage informed me that it has always had Mobil 1 fully synthetic in it. I decided to carry on the tradition.......but expensive and worth it long time. My view on oil is the better the oil and the more frequent you change it the less problems you will have.
I use Silkolene Pro -S 5w-40 in engine, Castrol SAF-XJ 75W-140 (LSD) in axle and Castrol SMX-S 75W-85 in the (manual) gearbox.
All the above have been used on the recommendations of various zoners and Oilman himself.

The prices have gone up, inline with oil prices though.

Does anyone know the original spec? Surely it must have been a mineral grade like 15/40?sam325is wrote:BMW use 0w on all enines, so im not sure if thick oil is such a good idea.
