It is possible yes.

b. Two big sacks of £20 notes

It's probably possible, but I've never seen it done. No doubt it'll be veeeery pricey though, all the E46 electrical gubbins will have to be sorted, as well as getting mounts, manifolds etc. made up... not for the faint hearted/shallow pocketed.
Not in E30s any more

Popular way of getting it working is to fit an E46 body loom/sensors into the E30

Yeah i understand it will cost a fair amount of cash but fancy that extra power and something that again is different as i have never heard of it before, the guy who i work with was thinking about it aswell but he has other projects that he's trying to complete so thats why he's selling

It has been done before..
You need an S54, and about twice as much money as an S50 swap for an extra few ponies..
Complete e46 m3 body loom or ££££ worth of standalone

If you run it on standalone the Omex system would run it....probs about 1k for that + additional sensors/mapping etc etc.......
Just done omex on a 1.6 with itb's so god knows what the S54 would be like......
GDI (grey devil industries) can supply omex off the shelf and also might be able to sort you out with a loom too.
for getting it in i cant wait to see it! go for it

I read all the way through this thread the other day (wish someone would edit out all the "go for it, man, whoa, awesome" type posts!), and was pleasantly surprised that's it appears to be relatively easy to get all the E46 electronics to work in an E30 (now that the author of this thread has done it all, and gives such good descriptions of what has to be done).tbmw wrote:has been done before

You do realy need the whole M3 to plunder, though.

If you loose the VANOS you can use s50 management.........
Then you can cam it up to near 400 ponies!

It's Iron.
Fairly certain the blocks are the same as the S50 anyway.

So your saying an S50 will run fine with the vanos removed on standard management?Trise30rally wrote:Really???![]()

Stop reading deeper into my posts!
No, you obviously need to do other things like a remap and maybe more but i do know for a fact that you can run an s54 on s50 management if you remove the VANOS.
I meant what i said in the first place, nothing more, nothing less.
It is just an option i know of and have seen running in a e36 3ltr hill climb car with an s54 engine that had a big blank plate where the VANOS used to be.

I suspect if you lock the vanos (like you can on an S50) then run a remapped S50 ecu with s50 loom/sensors it may well work..

Id be interested to hear from someone using a vanos locked motor with just a remapped ecu, not necessarily an S54, just an M50 or M52 etc, surely the most straight forward route is to use a standalone?

I'm not sure that many/any standalone management systems can handle dual VANOS. I've seen mention of it on Megasquirt forums on my briefs reads there, but I've never seen a "Hey guys, look at my S54 on MS" type thread.
But yes, if MS/Emerald/whatever could handle dual Vanos, it would be the way to go instead of playing with EWS etc.

i.e the fuelling and ignition will be fine,
Only the ecu may go into limp mode if it can tell it´s not operating the vanos.

The ECU will definitely go into limp mode and over fuel itself to death with no Vanos. 5500 rpm rev limit? No thanks.....
