I had a manual 535 SE before I got the e30. Generally great all round car although styling not as good as e30. Very quick but came into it's own on the motorway and could rub shoulders with the best of them once off the line. Handling is sweet too but don't ruin it with cheap tyres like I did !
1990 320i SE, 2door manual, sterling silver.
quote from Andyboy - The V8 530i is quite a lot faster than the 525i. I had a calypso red automatic which was capable of some very impressive MPG figures. It was a far more successful effort than the M30 530i.
Just out of interest, what reg was this as I had a K reg 530 V8 auto
BTW the V8 M60 in the 530 sounds great and goes a lot better than the M30 (had both
)
This is a pic of her (wish I'd never sold it!)

Anyway as I've had a few there isn't that much difference between the 530 V8 and the 525 (M50 vanos) - 530 has the slight edge
And going back to the H reg, I used to have one which was the M50 non vanos version - H reg onwards changed to M50's

Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.
Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

Never driven any auto BMWs so i'm sticking with the above78dude wrote:Try one with a manual gearbox fella, and you will change your mind...georob wrote:530 is too gutsy for what you get from it. Near enough same mpg as a 540 but with the speed of a 525 M50
E34 x 1 - V8 + lots of CF
E30 x 2 - Tourings (1 x M50, 1 x M40)
RS6 C5 - Stage 1 remap - 500bhp

I've been having same thoughts but I'm not quite convinced the fatter sister would give the same satisfaction on narrower country lanes, thou she'd be better on motorway for sure.
Can I blag a ride in anyone's e34 to help me make up my mind?

would say the e34 is a far better car,and will hustle just as well as the e30 round the twisty bits.just had a run over glen shee to tomintoul(fantastic road
) and there was two 34's(535 sportand 540 6 speed),and 3 e30's.the 34's had just as good handling, but you didnt have work the car nearly so hard.we used less fuel than any of the e30's!!especialy the 316(mind it was on the limiter most of the way.)
The M50 went into production in May 1990 although production of the M20 continued until June. Last year I broke up a 520i which was chassis number 11, build June 1990 and registered on an H plate. It still had the overdrive type gearbox.
Real OEM says that they started M50's in 1989 but that site has notoriously bad start-finish dates for cars. According to them, the E30 started production in December 1981!

In my opinion one of the best built BMW's of its time and possibly the last of the over engineered models.

My E34 535i Sport on my charity run between hotels on a long run was averaging 29 to the gallon at 80-85mph whch I was well pleased with.
The torque though in 5th gear 80-130+ was effortlessly quick topping out at 162.
