Removing the M40 and putting in Karans old M42 16v engine with only 60,ooomiles on it.

Engine has been standing for a couple of months and not driven for several more.Ran like a dream before removal. No chain rattle at all starts from really cold beautifully.

Can you recomend some fresh oil for engine and maybe gearbox.

Cheers.....Paul :)
Paul,

I would look at a good quality BMW approved 5w-40 full synthetic.

For best results look at the ester/pao synthetic like the SIlkolene Pro S or the Motul 300v.

Tech data here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Drop me a mail for prices.

Hope this helps.

Dear oilman , i'am Motul Addict so there is my question , actually with 6100 10w40 , my 325IX from 88 wiht 190.000kms (118.750mls) still uses like 0.5lt every 1.000kms .

The car runs on normal speeds , 90% of the time , but once in my hands is always on the red line , and mountains roads all the time , and , in the winter is full gaz for hours with studd tyres .

Oil change every year or 10.000kms(6.250mls) .

I whant to use the 300V again , but my mecanic is affraid that , the oil used before , i bought the car with 167.000kms(104.000mls) , was not full synthetic , so , i can damage the engine wiht the 300V .

True or not ?

Modern oils contain good detergents as part of the addative package and therefore the engine should be clean as a whistle.

I would not worry at all about using the Motul. It's a great oil!

I would use a 10w-40 or 5w-40 as you'll get less wear at start up.

Oilman. Got a question mate.

Ive got a 1.8 16v DOHC IS lump to put in my car soon. Its got about 150k on the clock, but is meant to be in pretty good nick and still pull nicely.

What would you recomend for this? I want to take as much care of the new engine as i can lol, so might as well start with new oil!

Also, how much will i need? and the engines been running fairly recently so wil it be ok to just drain the old oil, and fill with the new stuff. Or shall i wash it out with some more?

Swirly,

If the engine is still in good shape then I would suggest a good quality 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use.

I believe the sump holds around 6ltr.

If the engine has been stood then it might be an idea to give it a flush out with some fresh oil before putting a top synthetic.

Flushing Procedure (DonÔš't use flushing oils or additives)

1. Warm up engine to get oil circulating
2. Turn off engine and drain old oil
3. Fill with new oil to minimum (you will be wasting this)
4. Warm up engine to get oil circulating
5. Turn off engine, drain new oil and change filter
6. Fill to marker on dipstick

Cheers

Cheers mate, the engines only been stood in the car for about 3 weeks, until then it was running.

Will it be ok to just drain , put the new stuff in and a new filter?

What brand would you recomend? And how much would you recomend i buy mate, i wont get 6 liters, ill have some for spare, and incase my sump eats it up a bit quicker.

Once i know what ones for me ill give you a bell and order some, need it asap!

Hi,

For the engine, ideally a 5w-40 full synthetic for best results, as a cost option you can go with a 10w-40 semi synthetic and change twice as often.

For the gearbox and diff I would recomend the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 for both, or a 75w-90 for the gearbox and a LS90 for the diff.

Plenty to choose from here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Drop me a mail for prices.

Hello,

I need your advice....

I'm nearly finished on my project and since all the major issues have been worked out I'm thinking now of the smaller issues such as oil.

I run a 2.5 with 150k now, still pulls fine, no smoke and only recently had a full oil change including new sump gasket and the sump cleaned and refitted.

With the turbo on, do you suggest a diff oil for engine, box and diff?

I use fully synthetic normally, the box and diff are topped up still and I've not changed them since I've had the car.

Also, not that it is oil related, but is there an alternative to water that I can use in the cooling system? or an addative I can add to aid cooling?

Thanks, Mark.

Mark.

For the engine I would suggest a good quality 10w-50 full synthetic if you have a turbo, the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 will be ideal for this.

For the gearbox I would suggest the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 and the BOA90LS for the diffs.

As for cooling, yes there are coolants, have a look at the Silkolene Pro cool or the Motul inuegal optimal here;

in germany we call 5w40 panther-piss.
it is too thin and makes the motor extremely loud.
this oil ist for motors after 1995,not for old motors.
10w40 or 15w40 is recommended for m20b25,m20bn20 and m40b16/18

So, how is that possible my friend.

They are all 14cst at 100degC, the same viscosity sae 40

They are all thicker at cold than at 100degC

The lower the number "w" the quicker the oil flows on start-up, getting to engine parts quicker and preventing wear.

And, you are not correct, 5w-40 is recommended for many pre 95 cars for all year round use, I should check your facts!

Cheers

Simon, I'm sure you are absolutely correct with above post - I am going to change the oil on my 1986 BMW 635Csi to fully synthetic very shortly - can you confirm that 5-40 fully synth will be ok for my 'Big 6'??

Yep, it's 5w-40 or 10w-40.

The 5w-40 will give better cold start protection and therefore less wear.

It needs a decent shear stable one though.

Hi there, I'm due an oil change on my '93 316i Touring. It's done nearly 168000 8O and it's my daily driver. I was looking at Mobil Super S 10W 40, but what would you recommend?

Hi, what is the downside of using 0w40 fully synthetic, rather than 5w40?

If the engine is in good shape then a 5w-40 synthetic would be of benefit, 10w-40 is a cost option but does not give the best level of cold start protection.

Nothing at all, they cost more and are not totally necessary for UK climate.

What is recommended for an '89 M30 with about 140k miles? There was a bit of oil coated on the inside of the oil pan, but I cleaned the most of it out. No blockage at all in the oil pump screen, but the oil drained out was quite black. Also, is Redline MT90 a good choice for the transmission?

Hi,

FOr the E30 M3 we would recomend as a top option the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 ester/pao synthetic, the Pro R 15w-50 if it is a track car.

The Redline 90 is good quality oil but way over priced IMO so we would suggest another top gear oil such as the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 and this will also be suitable for the diffs.

Hmm. Well, I suppose that would be a good recommendation if I had an M3, but I don't. I need a recommendation for an '89 M30B35. Also, the Redline isn't that expensive. I only paid 8.95 a qaurt for it.

Woooooooooooops

On second glance I see it now.

Well, if you want the best, then the same oils apply.

If not a 10w-40 semi synthetic or a 15w-40 mineral oil.

The US quart is just under 1ltr, and the Silkolene is Ԛ£7.99 ltr for better quality oil.
