I've run ICE quite some time now. I am currently running:

Alpine CDA-7967
Arc Audio CXL2500 Ltd Edition (2 x 270RMS @ 4 ohm)
DLS A6 (1.2Kw @ 1ohm)
Dynaudio System 340 (3ways)
Image Dynamics IDMAX D2 (IB install - ie Freeair)

I have previously run surround system support Dobly Digital & DTS as well as a 3 way active system.

A great place for ICE is www.talkaudio.co.uk (I spend a lot of time on there) :)

I'm quite partial to a bit of ICE action as well.

Here's my current setup:

Sony cdx-C90r headunit
Sony cdx91 changer
Genesis 5 channel amp
MB Quart 215.61Q components
2x JL Audio 8w6 subs in a sealed enclosure

I'm still setting it up a bit at the moment, and experimenting with different configurations, but it does sound nice :D

Cerwin vega's are generally spl subs and if you already have the cerwin's put them in a ported box as that's what they perform best in.

I've done a of experimenting with ice over the years, and i've found that there is no replacement for displacement when it comes to subs. The more you have the better. I believe its better to spend for example Ԛ£300 on 4 sh*t subs that Ԛ£300 on 1 good sub.

If you haven't bought any yet and have a big budget get two atomic 15" apocolipse subs, Ԛ£350 each and you will need 1000wrms each. These were really good in every car i put them in.

If that's a bit much i also used four 12" db audio subs in my first E30. I used a common chamber ported box with the subs in a isobaric configuration (subs in pair's facing each other) with only 1200wrms going up them and i got at least 130db's.

I currently have: Pioneer deh 77mp head unit
2xGenesis stereo 60 amps
1xGenesis dual mono amp
and four subs which cost Ԛ£7.50 each
Yes thats correct Ԛ£7.50 each and they sound great. I just got curious when i seen them for that price and though i might aswell give them ago for a laugh. But damn they sound great.

I got them from a shop in town (leicester). I'm using 4, and they really do sound get it's unbelievable how good they sound.

I was going to buy some JL's, but i don't need to now. It's left me with a few hundred Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£'s left for other parts on the cab. :D

They have dual 6 ohm voice coils which are wired in parallel to show the amp a 1.5 ohm load. The Amp is stable to 1 ohm, so this is fine.

I need to do a bit more experimentation with the enclosure though, as I think the volume is too big to get the best out of the subs.

Too big is not much of a problem to deal with, stick some polystyrene (or similar) blocks in there to reduce the volume until you happy with it, then build a new box that smaller by the amount you put in :)

Too small can be combated with wadding, although not ideal :)

Good idea. Never thought of using Polystyrene to reduce the volume. Do you think it would be okay to use on a permanent basis ?

I don't really want to rebuild the box, as it fit's nicely in the boot, and is designed to sit on top of the Amp enclosure.

Yeah it would be fine longer term as long as they are glued in very well :)

These are what i'm running (pioneer 12's), think they were 350 or near enough for the box, the subs and the amp (which i hadnt heard of before but seems to do the job!)
Theyre pretty loud, just need to get a decent set of components for the front to balance out the sound.

if you've opened up a sub box for any reason then laying some dynomat in there never hurts..... a tip i only picked up recently.

the likely reason that chu's budget (Ԛ£7.50) subs worked so well is that they were sympathetically installed. (am i right?) i ran some maplin 'eminence' subs for a while in a hatchback shelf that i took some time creating. (i had time and no money) and they astounded all that heard them, even fooling some very experienced folk that they were top money subs.

matt - subs are generally aimed at the volume or quality ends of the market. some go loud and some sound nice - a good dealer will be able to demonstrate the difference quite simply. subs that go loud and sound nice tend to cost a little more. as ever though, care and quality of installation is crucial to the end result.

to my mind one of the keys in achieving quality bass in a saloon is getting the sound out of the boot and into the cabin. how precious is your metal? personally i don't like the forced through the body shell and upholstery with a megawatt amp type sound - it always seems to sound what it is.

a previous owner has cutout the ski hatch so thats not a prob,

my old escort xr3i it was easy... jbl 6x9`s on the rear shelf and two alpine subs in a twin sealed box, then up front... alpine 4" mid and 1" tweeter in the doors.
powered by jbl 280amp and an alpine 600amp

sounded pretty damn good

i've only got one 10" sub but it is right behind centre arm rest, i removed the kick out panel so it's like having the sub right in your ear hole lol.

i'm looking for some rear shelf replacement speakers any idea's people?

If you can hear that the Sub is behind you, then you probably need to change the Sub crossover frequency.

Sub frequencies are not generally directional, so you probably have too many higher frequencies coming through the sub, so you can hear where it's coming from.

Also, you don't really want speakers in the back. This will mess up the sound stage and muddle the sound. You should concentrate on a good set of front speakers and if possible amplify them rather than running from the headunit.

Cheers,

Ian.

I'd get some jl audio components from ebay and jl audio subs can be had aswell but i think their quite expensive, but the jbl power subs are great, even the gt4's are great.

You'll be happy with 2 of the power subs running 400wrms each or 4 gt4's at 250wrms each.

I've had jbl components before and i didn't like them (before they blew up).

I don't know to much about HED subs and HED components, so i can't comment on those mate.

I can't tell you what size subs to use you need to make that choice yourself. But i can tell you that 8's don't go low enough unless :bling: and 12's are the middle ground between 10's and 15's (obviously).

Generally the smaller the sub the tighter the sound, but at the cost of deepness. The larger you go the slower the bass but you get more bass the bigger you go per set amont of power and it's alot deeper.

You can make small sub go deep and you can make big subs tight but you might aswell pick the correct one in the first place.

You need to sample 10's and 15's really, and make a desision on that either way i'd say go for jbl gt4's. 4x10's or 2x15's will be your best bet, but it also depends on what amp your going to power them with?

How much power does your amp have (rms) and how many ohms does it work best at?
