okok, in fantasy land...

A nice solid touring with a 4.4l M62/6speed manual up front and 9J rims at the back. I reckon the balance wouldn't be too bad with the all alloy M62. I know the figures on an M62 can be beaten by a lot of other hotter V8s but they are just such deceptive lazy engines and capable of punting a lardy E39 along at warpspeed. In an E30 it would be incredible.

Pretty sure there was one on sale here a while back or it was all the gubbins to make it so.

V6 twin turbo sitting low with a dry sump. The shorter engine should balance the car abit. Redone chassis, maybe as aluminium monocoque with cf panels. All in all a light car with brutal power - to stay in the spirit of things :)

whats the ultimate mean in what sense?

whatever the engine it needs to have a clean power delivery to help get it all on the tarmac. Spinning up in 3rd, 4th is great but you can't drive it fast fast!

tuned M52 2.8 would be my vote

ultimate E30? you can't just say 4 or 6 pot. You have to consider which model touring, saloon, cab etc and whats ultimate for one person will not be ultimate for another.

To me an H27 conversion on a touring pretty much ticks all the boxes. Will it be quicker than an M3? probably not but it would be MY ultimate E30

Tired E30 M3 fully restored Nogaro silver or Black tp Factory standards shell wise but all seam welded first.
The rebuilt with every option you can tick from the factory

Then changing some bits for...

Supercharged S42 engine, or turbo'ed S14 or FI S62
6 speed manual
5 stud conversion using Z3M running gear, E46 Carbon ceramic brakes if they would fit on the car and under wheels that are 17"s max
BBS LMS or RS's (whichever is preferred)
Half leather interior,
Smoked Hella front lights and indicators for exterior mods but nothing else after them and the wheels and Sport Evo front valance, splitter and rear spoiler
M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
Oversteer

You're almost there, Dave.
I'd stick with an highly tuned M42 (or S42), 8500rpm at least!
The gearbox had to be very close ratio, to keep it boilling!!

For me it would be a white or silver TechII Touring with a 2.5 M3 engine and running gear, 17”a BBS splits, very low ride height It would have full black leather and a nice sound system.

those lumps are iron block jobbies ala E36 M3 US spec, so a bit too heavy for me i think

actually can i change mine to the new R6 3.0 lump in the E90 260bhp, have it and 10% lighter than the old M54 3.0 unit it replaced

The ultimate engined E30 is only going to be practical if you can use/put down the power well, rip out the trailing arms and replace it with some sort of double wish bone set up or may be graft in an E36 rear end some how ??

But this might be taking things too far................?

How many decent power E30's can be pushed in the wet with any confidence ?

I'd have to go for either one of 2 polar opposites. None of this 6pot middle-ground rubbish winkeye.

Either:

M62 6 speed touring. The ultimate lazy comfort-cruiser with some serious punch if needed.

or

S42 (or as close as you could get with an M42) powered 4 pot screamer, NA and able to rev to about 9k.
Not in E30s any more :(

Touring. Seam welded shell. Converted to 2dr. Space frame chassis with the track narrowed slightly to accomodate 9" rims up front and 10" rims out back without external modifications. Handsome drop on fully adjustable coilovers attatched to modern suspension componants. Mid-mounted BMW engine (lightweight lump, high revving but fairly large in capacity for generous amounts of torque) obviously blueprinted and tuned to an immaculate level with bespoke lightened, balanced internals (and enclosed from interior cabin). 'Built' 6sp gearbox. 16" magnesium rims (black). Ceramic brake setup. Soundproofed interior retaining carpets (although lighter weight carpets), carbon fibre seats, door cards, dashboard all covered in dark grey alcantera. Carbon fibre body panels where possible. 'se' side skirts, 'is' front lip. Probably painted in white.....

or an early chromie US spec on steels with a jet engine in the boot... :D

What 4cyl boys have got to remember is that the E3 was designed from the off to have a 6 cyl engine and this is what suits it best. True there was a 4 cyl from early on but this was a poverty model and thevery first cars were 6 cyl.

BMW is most famous four is 6 cylinders engines.

Cue the debate!

I bumped into an old pal this evening who has all of the above on his e46.
Oh and he believes hand on heart it all works and gives more than the claimed too.

Ultimate E30 for me... a touring converted into a 2 door with the M3 arch kit fitted. The 2.5 S14 modified to around 300bhp with M3 uprated suspension and 5 stud's. Or E46 M3 CSL engine would be nice with 6 speed.

Black leather... or the dark Cecotto half leather with MTec cloth centers, Sport evosteering wheel, gearknob and handbrake lever. Dark grey or black carpet. M3 clocks.

Closest to the Ultimate I've seen so far is Damian's old red Touring.

Standard, besides the M3... its gotto be a nice 325i sport.... but as they are pretty rare in nice condition I would go for a 318is as they always seem to drive nice. :)
E30 M3 Unichip Alpha N style conversions, this is the ultimate for extracting the best out of your S14 M power car.
Also, Live mapping of your Standard Motronic ECU for optimising all your modifications.
