As some may have read, we did have the odd "issue" prior to getting the car ready, but we made it.
The big day arrived, and we got ourselves down to Ashford for the Eurostar. The four of us all had a nervous sort of anticipation as to what lay ahead. None of us have been there before, and i have not even done track days or the like for years.
The crossing went well, with the train acting as a mobile garage for the last minute checks (remember the engine only went in two days before :) )
Image

We then had a fun if rather noisy run down through France, Belgium and the Germany. The car ran well, handling quite smoothly, and the engine seemd ok so far. We arrived at the Nurburgring about 3pm, and landed straight in the waiting car park.
I never expected the atmosphere to be so friendly, nor the noise to fill the air the way it did. There's cars and bikes testing, running, and in the distance, racing and sliding.
We were blessed with good weather, and the people we met over there were on the whole, very friendly.
The car park was littered with everything from Ferrari's and Porsche's to , erm, our 20 year old un tested BMW!
A sample of what was there were-

And having planned to do the first run on Saturday, but having been bitten by the 'Ring bug already, the first laps were done on Friday before we'd even found the hotel.

Image

The first lap i did was something i'll never forget. Those of you who've done it might recall the aniticpation building as you approach the barrier for the first time, then gently build your pace up as you approach the first brow, and then the road drops away ahead of you and you see the first bends, as soon as I saw it for myself i knew i was going to have a fantastic time.

And luckily the car even came back in one piece!

Image

The specs of the car worked well, the spax PSX kit worked well, not being too upset by the lumps and bumps of the 'Ring, but allowing the tyres to work really well. The brakes worked well, after some concerns were expressed about the Green stuffs being up to it. We were able to read the track fairly well, and after a few laps, the brakes were nt getting nearly as much use once we started to improve the lines between bends.
After a few laps we finished for the night, and retired to the hotel (Am-Tiergarten if you are interested), and we were really impressed with the location, staff and food at this great place. We were lucky and got an upgrade to "Sabine's House", which is a house consisting of 6 apartments, and a triple garage.
So after a busy first day, we put the old girl to bed for the night (The car, not Sabine)

Image

After a great Pizza and a few beers, we started Saturday a little bleary, more through tiredness than drink.
The car had a good nights kip, but mis-behaved coughing and farting (as opposed to the boys, who snored and farted ALL night)

Image

The atmosphere was a little different on Saturday, there were not only more people, but a slightly edgier feel. On track, we all were suffering a little at the hands of people pushing us of line, and cutting us up. My only observation would be, it's better to back off and let them get on with it, than get over involved and crash. There were several crashes that day, with bikes cars and a combination coming together.

This particular Evo was mullered

Image
These however survived!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We did nt bother with a Ring Taxi, as they did nt seem to be going that quick, looked cool though

Image

Image

And there still seemed an endless line of cars to drool over queing to get on (and over take me  )...

Image

In all the videos I've watched, and features i've read, i was nt prepared for the cambers, inclines, declines and run-offs (or lack of)
After the car seemed to be devloping a mis fire, Nigel discovered a vacuum hose had split with a two inch hole in it. After half an hour, he'd fixed it, and it ran faultlessly. The owner of the M5 Touring (above) came over a gently laughed at the hose, as if to say, "been there, had that"

The laps continued, and we all went through a process of improving lines and corners, but the guys did a great job of getting to grips with the car and the track, and put together some respectable laps considering the lack of power it's got.

I struggled a bit on Saturday, trying a bit too hard, and getting lines messed up. It did nt help having car after car pushing through.
The following day though, things settled, and got a better lap in the bag, and was very happy to call it my last on this trip.
I say this trip, because we'll be back next year, with a better car, and possibly others to go with it!

Thanks to all those that took the time to chat to the new boys, there was nt the snobbery you get at some events.

Nice pics and report, I was there this weekend as well driving my 316i. I saw your car in the carpark a couple of times, along with a fair few other white e30's.

Chessington isn't too bad James, at least it wasn't in Belgium or France. My trip home was drama-free, the car was ok once it was at about 70-80, but very shakey when going slower. Smokes nicely at idle, the guy at the check-in office at Norfolk Line got a face full (of smoke, that is) which cracked me up.

From first noticing a problem to the major hammering which precedes a thrown rod, about 450 miles Bloody tough, these M20s.
Yes Theo, I was very glad to make it back to the UK, especially towing 500Kgs of trailer (camping gear, the kids bikes, BBQ, tyres on BBS, trolley jack, spare shocks, driveshafts, the usual stuff).
I regret not pinching that other trailer now.....the one in the overflow car park with the early M20B25 and Sport box in it

After all the troubles we had, we did nt want to break it. But to be honest, our air leak did nt help our power, and even after it was fixed, the poor little thing does nt really have the power to take on the 'Rings gradients. Hopefully we'll be a little quicker next year.
The idea being muted for next year is for an engine swap, or even a different car, as well as this one going (And maybe a Ducatti and a Caterham and an Evo :D )
Roll onnext year!!

325i is more than quick enough for the ring MunichMotorsport, the key is knowledge of the circut not how much power you have. A 325i is a good car to learn it in. Once learn't then maybe get something faster would be my advice

Second that! Don't worry about who passed you and who not, there will ALWAYS be somebody who is passing you regardless of how much you upgrade your car. But that's not the point of the Ring. Track knowledge is the key and CLEAN driving. I have a friend who manages a shade under 9 mins in a STOCK E34 540i on a set of cheap road tyres and road brake pads! The car had 140k miles on the clock and was bouncing like a ship.

As long you come home and say "what a great weekend" everything is good. I used to HATE the Ring with passion but now I can't wait to go back (...I even bought a years ticket  )

Edit: get a shorter diff to master the uphill secions, helps a lot

I'm soooooooo tempted to go now  but i gotta wait till next year when i've got funds.

Just hoping my ol' 320i's got it where it counts, i've been spending enough time sorting all the various issues out on it

Any specifics would be greatly apprciated, like spare parts to take (ie spare pads / discs) tools etc etc..

I may not have to worry about accomodation since my cousion lives in Cologue :D

My first trip was in a 320i, it's possible to have lots of fun in one.
Just make sure the car is well-serviced and that joints, seals, bearings and bushes are all good. It's better to set off with parts that won't fail than to carry spares.
I would recommend upgrading to some form of bolt-through engine mount, but that's probably due to the number I've broken there......
MunichMotorsport made it there and back without serious issues, which is more than I did!

Uwe, I think I met your friend at Easter last year. Nice chap, had some coolant system trouble?
You do realise that having bought your first Jahreskarte you are now hopelessly addicted and will lap whenever humanly possible (because "after 66 laps they're free!")?

The other advantage of a short diff is that you can take the Foxhole flat without worrying too much about your speed - you'll be bouncing off the limiter @ 130

even with the shorter diff my limiter is well above 130. I can rev to 8000.

i'll go flat out to the bottom of the fox's hole but i ease off as you come up it. Only the insane keep their foot planted! Only because my nerves won't allow more i don't know. 120-125 is plenty quick enough through there for me.

I take as spares a fuel pump, relay, coolant pipes, 2 spare wheels with matching tyres, Fluids, front wheel bearing, prop centre bearing. (i've killed 2 there and every trip someones fails) a good bunch of tools. Or basically enough to cover me for everything bar major engine, gearbox, diff failure.

i like to replace all of these items but you just never know there and the strangest things can fail when your out there and it's a long way home. I had a blow out last trip at wipperman on new tyres and lots of other niggles occur when i'm there

car is begging for its new larger turbo after fitting 888s which have insane amounts of grip and i have had to completely relearn my car as a result.

my bro kept his foot in at 130ish in the leon... scary stuff. i took it easy first time out and did it at about 100, and had column to exhaust manifold contact 8O i took it slower after that!!!!! i can't say the massive runoff inspires confidence when the steering wants to lock at half what you need to make it round!!!!!

It's not the Foxhole itself that's the problem - you can pretty much see through it and the compression means you'll never run out of grip.
The difficulties come after you've taken Fuchsrohre flat and are now heading uphill at 130+mph toward a blind left-hander over a crest. Get the turn-in point right and it can be taken safely at over 100 mph. Get it wrong enough and if you live you'll be charged for half a ton of Armco and probably some trees, too

Thanks for the tip about the Diff, i'll look into that as we are running a 4.1 at the mo'.
@Karan, good to see you got back in one piece, having seen you drive it was probably sideways at about 120MPH!

very very true////

for me the difficulty is just after the compression where i dont have the balls to be braking into the left while leaning on the right tyres at this high speed. The car is so light under braking

thank god for the brake bias as i usually have to tweak it a cpl clicks forward as the lap goes on and the rear tyres get hotter 8O
