The touring's going to the garage today to have the 3.64 diff fitted. After all the years I spent doing all my own work (I worked in garages and was allowed to use the workshop facilities), I get nervous about leaving my baby with someone else.
Mind, if I'd have been able to get it 6ft up on a four-poster, those two bazzer bolts would never have beaten me!! :hammer:

Good luck - hope it goes well.

Had my touring fitted with a 3.64 LSD a while back and it's made an incredible difference - more fun to drive yet more relaxed on the motorways.

I don't feel quite so bad now, the lad that's doing the job lives just up the road from me.

Thanks for the opinions on the 3.64 Dudes. I'm still concerned that it may be slightly too long in a 320i though. Can't wait to road-test it. :drive::burn: .......And mine's an open diff BTW.

:cheese::cheese::cry: Bloody muppet's just been on the 'phone to say that the 3.64 wont fit!! He reckons that the driveshafts are too long for the large case diff.
Sounds like he's had the 4.27 out though - so at least I should be able to get all the bolts undone when I have a go at the job myself. :hammer:

On the LS diff the output flange's are sorter to accomodate the wider housing and can be used with the same driveshafts.
Sounds more like he can't do it.
Unless you have the wrong diff ?
Where's it from ?

Came out of a pre-facelift 325i, if I remember correctly.

It's true what they say
If you want it done properly do it yourself.
Did the guy take the old one off and offer the new one up or was he just looking at it ?

Sounds like he's had the 4.27 out. He says that the driveshaft flanges are 50mm (ie 25mm each side) too far towards the wheels on the 3.64.

It's not a very good pic but thats what they look like.
If there any bigger then some one has swapped them in which case i'd take it apart and make sure they haven't sold you an open diff in a LSD housing.
Or it could be off another BM but i've never heard of any like that.

3.64 open diff is now for sale........ See For Sale section.
I can't be doing with all the faff-on and I don't have the facilities to do the job myself. :x
I tried 3 garages before I could find one prepared to do the job. All the others refused point-blank. So now I'm stuffed!

Last time I spoke to him, he wasn't prepared to waste any more time on the job, other than to build it back up again.

Got car back now. Tried another 3 garages and none of them wanted to know. I explained to all of them that the hard bit (getting the bolts undone) has been done and all it needs is the prop loosened. Still they don't wanna know. One even said "If it's that easy, why don't you do it yourself?"!!
I'm well p122ed off now. Looks like the job will never get done. :(
Thanks for all your support Chaps. :thumb:

Man that's a kick in the teeth!

You would expect a bloody garage to know what they were doing, guess it goes to show really...

Stuart
If you want a good mechanic to fit your LSD.
Try George Lambrou at Auto Bavaria. He's a top bloke, and i,m sure he wouldn't say no to you.His rates are very reasonable, and he loves E30's.

Thanks for that Craig, but I'm not free until the weekend. :(
I'm a bit dubious about having another go at home 'coz I haven't got any form of hardstanding (garage is full of stuff builders had to get out of house) :hammer:
Was a bit iffy last time having the car on ramps and stands on gravel!! That may have been why I couldn't get two bolts undone - car was rocking and I got scared of pushing any harder!!!:surrender:

Simon, see above. Trolley jack and creeper don't run too well on gravel! This is why, ideally, I need it done for me - or to get access to a workshop.
