I'd guess (hope) that you are seeing litres per 100km.

Try pressing the little round button at the bottom to cycle through measurement units.

tiny round button bottom right,poke in a biro to switch modes.

For consumption:
km/l is euro metric
mpg is US mpg
m/g is UK mpg
