Not sure about M40 engine but I undone mine a few weeks ago on M42 engine and was right hand thread.

Try this if u have tried yet!!
"Put a power bar vertically upwards on the pulley bolt and a block of wood on the LH chassis arm. Crank the starter motor momentarily (start the car) so that the bar rotates 90 degrees into the block of wood! 3-4 goes will normally release it"

Hope this helps.

If i'm thinking of the wright thing your talking about i've never had to undo that nut. Its a tight fit but the belt does go on.

Only changing the belt/tensioner.Managed to do it in the end by using flywheel locking pin and brute force!

I've just remembered!!!!!!!!!!!

6 10mm bolts and its off, the crank nut is under alot of torque thats why even an air gun would'nt get it off. There is a reason its done up so tight so i suggest you do it up to the correct torque otherwise you might find your pulley spinning past you along the road while your back wheels have locked up cos ya belts come off :hammer:
