Manifold - to lag or not to lag

Hi,

I've got a hottuning manifold on its way - I've read up on the benefits of insulating the exhaust to keep it hot & flowing. Anybody got an opinion on lagging the manifold & if its beneficial

I was going to do it to mine but then i noticed that if you did you would end up fouling the steering linkage because the manifold would get wider.....

on a normal aspirated car they do f*** all for power increase in my opinion. they are good to reduce under bonnet temperature and protect other components from heat. (the frame rail of the M3 as an example, don't know how close the 6 cylinders are).

if ypu don't want to wrap there is jet-coating. But ££££££

Talking to the chap at www.zeroexhausts.co.uk they can do a lot more harm than good. By trapping the heat they can shorten the life of the manifold. Unless you are really generating excessive heat I wouldn't bother. You'd be better off wrapping or sheilding the components that are too close if that's the problem.

And on another point the hottuning manifold goes a nice shade of purple when hot. Why cover it up!

Good value for £200 quid. Those Chinese must be knocking out like crazy.

OK, thanks for the info everyone - so I'll not bother lagging. Yep the manifold is a work of art, lovely looking. Just got a couple of hours with a dremel to finish it off. Thanks again

I'm having mine ceramic coated.

Not too expensive at all.

Worth it IMO.

It depends on what people think is expensive. About 100 English pounds gets the system done, ceramic coated inside and out ~ a little workshop here in Melbourne is doing it for me. Whether or not people think ceramic coating is a waste of time seems to find people in both camps. I think keeping heat in the exhaust system, increasing gas velocity and keeping underbonnet temps as low as I can (especially on a track car) is pretty cool (pardon the pun ).
