If you had a 4pot and wanted to fit a 6pots rev counter what bits needs changin for it to read right and not 150% if you see what i mean..

Is it a little chip or summat? if you were to just use the 6pot rev counter cluster part would there still be the issue?

Coding chip. No need to open up the cluster. Clips into front of cluster, lower right side. Little white plastic box, with the model details printed on it. Doesn't apply to very early clusters so I've heard.

ah right cool - so if i just stuck a rev counter out of a 6pot into a 4pot it would be fine as the codin chip will still be in place..

Remove coding chips from both clusters, and stick the one from your old cluster (which should have 316 or 318 written on it), and plug it into your new cluster. Before fitting your new cluster into the car, check all the lamps are OK, and if you like everything on your car to work, open it up and resolder the joints of a large 220 ohm resistor (lives in little rectangular lump on the back of the cluster), near the top of the temp gauge. This will stop your brake pad warning lights from playing up.

thing is my cluster shows the cars mileage of 60k...

The speedo swaps out of the cluster easily. No soldering required.
