A mate of mine has an e34 2.5 (M50 I presume) with a 6-speed box.
I know people can use the m42 box on the m50 conversion so my question is what are the ratios on the 6speed box and can I bolt it up to the m42??

Sure its not just a 6 speed gear lever on it 
E34 x 1 - V8 + lots of CF
E30 x 2 - Tourings (1 x M50, 1 x M40)
RS6 C5 - Stage 1 remap - 500bhp

A friend of mine has a 325i E36 with a 6 speed on it. To be fair it also has E36 M3 evo running gear, the box is from an E46 ad the clutch is an E46M3 one that's been machined down to fit the E36 flywheel...
Possible, but not factory!
Oh, and he says it was an absolute waste of time. It doesn;t have the torque to pull 6th so uses more fuel despite the MUCH lower revs, so he'd have to fit a higher ratio diff, and all that'd do is make 1st utterly pointless and give him an expensive 5 speed plus a landrover low ratio stlye 1st gear!
