e30 325i is it quick enough for modern cars

ok basically ive had a 316 and a 318is. i woudnt mind getting a 325 now. but ive fallen into the civic vtec, integra type rs any hatch really that is quick of the mark in a straight line. so i show up with my 2.5 ltr e30
and the 1.6s still are quicker
. is this true and is there much in it??

325i is nippy rather than quick nowadays - but the competition is generally FWD overservo'd numb rubbish and it will never be an achievement to drive one fast, and not as much fun either.

i know in my heart these civics will pass me an i know ill be sickend buyin a sport for 6k. i love the e30s always. im lost on my choice what to buy nxt. power makes me smile just wish they sat at 200bhp standard lol.

It was one of the fastest of it's era - I love driving around in my 320 (with 2.5 lump in it) which is a D reg and looks basic, dull but can shock most other cars on the road - which is nice, how many other D 1987 cars can do that 
Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.
Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

the people that try to convnice you about it being all about the complete driving package rather than speed etc etc will own slow cars.
they arent fast compared to the type r sort of cars . if you want outright straight line speed turbo your e30 or buy something else.

Drove mine all the way to Felixstowe and back last Sunday,kept up with most of the modern stuff, and even embarrsed some much younger cars. Never missed a beat, which was more than can be said for my misse,s map reading, was supposed to be going to Ipswich

It depends though what your looking for. If your talking about something that will give the type rs, imprezas..... a run for their money then in terms of e30s the e30 m3 is the best for you.
If you just want awesome noise and a cruise mobile then the 325i is better suited. Dont forget that all modern cars today are generally quicker and our e30s are getting on a bit now.

325i's are not very fast at all mate, I had a Sport and my expectations were massive and when I got it I realised that by todays standards the Sport wasnt fast......BUT the overall thrill the Sport gave me was superb.....Getting the arse end out coming out of a junction, Doing a sneaky donut now and then and the noise it made were all I needed to put a smile on my face.
Ive been there and done that and loved every minute of Sport ownership but I would never buy another.
Ive literally sold my Golf last night and Im going to buy a Civic Type R which will leave a Sport in a straight line and on the twisties and have better fuel economy and be more reliable.
I still maintain that the Sport has been my best car to date but I cant justify paying Sport money now for what they are.
I dont think you will be dissapointed with whichever car you go for 325i or Civic Type R.
P.s The Civics are 2 litre Mate and the Integras are 1800 and not both 1600's

Fuzzys Cosworth touring will wipe the floor with a standard 325i - but in reality a standard 325i still be a bit quicker than a lot of modern stuff.
However as has already been said speed isn't everything - you could buy a Fiat Uno Turbo or R5 GT Turbo which might well be quicker than a 325i. Sh1te cars though.

the e30 bmw has agreat following aswell ok so they are not re-fined like most newer cars still wearing the model badge e.g civic, but every owner in another e30 waves and flashes you don't get that with other makes and models execpt mini's before bmw made it a laughing stock

Well David, how are things?
A 325 will not be as quick as a type R, but it's definately not all about speed. An 2.5 E30 is all about the feel of the car. You'll have to take one for a spin.
Call over some evening. I'm tidying a 2.5 touring at the minute, you'll notice a good difference from your old IS. At the minute it's bog standard, engine wise, so it'll give you a good idea of what they're like. I have a chip and big bore throttle body for it, I've a 3.73 LSD on the way and I'm getting a new exhaust soon. Once I have it finished you can try it out again and see the possibilities.

I've had a 54 reg civic type R in a half mile straight line drag but only just.
That was in my 325i sport with only a btb six branch and scorpion exhaust.

Try driving an e36 316i mobile road block, wheel spin just isnt there or anything you would call grunt. A car like this challenges you in much different ways when driving like a tool than something you can plant your foot down in and hope you get past school of thought.
Try a 325i with a lightened flywheel, trnasforms the car and helps the age gap.
New cars are easier to drive fast due to better technology in chassis design and electronic driver aids, this doesn't mean always they are any less fun to drive. My only site at the newer stuff is the lack of intimate feedback a well sorted E30 can give in absolutely any situation rain or shine 100mph or 10mph. Obviously some new cars don't suffer from the feedback problem but most seem to in some way or another, run flat tyres or electric assisted steering
hopefully not offending anyone bigger than me but f**k civic type rs, who really wants a car you see driving around all over the place...sacrificing a bit of speed for individuality and style is a no brainer for me 
if you got a 2 grand 325 like mine and spent the difference on making it go faster in a straighline im sure you would be keeping up with a type r? they arent that fast afterall lol i used to abuse them in my 16v 309gti 2 door...

Ive seen this argument on another forum but it was a mk3 VR6 V's Type R and most people were saying the type R would win, And as a VR6 is faster than a 325i id also say a Type R is faster than the 325i.
