As above i've never had my petrol light come on, now i've let it go right off the bottom of the red block and still no light (may be blown) so i've put a new one in and yet again no light and as before off the bottom of the block, the last thing i want to do is run it dry and dragg all the crud in the filter. This is doin my head in as i'm guessin my mpg, i'm sure that as a rough from bottom of red (Ԛ£20) gets me half tank aprox 130 miles to bottom of red. What else could cause the light not to work (gauge works) is there a switch on the gauge that activates this light????
or does it come direct from tank?????

The reserve light works from a seperate switch built into the same housing as the level sender, and is extremely reliable and fairly accurate.
Carry a can of petrol with you, and run it till it either stops or the light comes on. You won't suck up any crud from the tank. I'd advise keeping out of the third lane of motorways while you do this though.
As an alternative, unscrew the drain plug on the tank and check it that way.

When my light comes on,it's usually past red.
When it comes on I can drive for 38 miles before it runs out.
I've had the needle halfway across the yellow light itself and it still hasn't run out,in fact it was a bit like that when I pulled in tonight......

Jesus, 25miles on the trip counter and an empty tank. You put 2 pounds in on last "fill up"?

Still that photo will be saved to show my friends who think my trusty 112k 318i won't make LeMans and back. Pah

Came to work this morning with the light on, range finder on OBC tells me I got 32 miles left, on the way I watched it go to 17 which is where I left until I go home in a bit. I have driven and watched before when it went all the way to nish ! at this point you get a flashing dotted line. Even then i drove another 5 miles before topping up.
By the way if you run out of "motion lotion" and plod arrives you can technically be done for driving with out due care and attention ! Bet you didnt know that *!!*

Yup, and it is ILLEGAL to join a motorway in the knowledge that you don't have enough fuel to get to a service station.

I know what you mean about the 40 to a tenner though
something abotu that car if its in the power* band then it drinks like a mofo!
* not that there's really much power in an m40

Just in case anyone was worried 'bout me, I filled up with OBC range indicater saying 9 miles left. I put 55 litres in and range is now 329. My trip meter, which i always reset at fill up time, ( I know...odd thing to do but hey) read 318 miles done on last tank.
Spooky or wot?
