Flat spot, help! :(

My car has an annoying flat spot at high0ish revs

In nuetral, it will rev to redline (6k rpm)
In first , it will rev to the redline
In second, it will rev to 5k
In third, it will rev to 4k
in 4th, it will rev to 4k

If i keep the foot down, it usually gets to around 5k, then begins to die again

Its not a major problem, as im rarely at that high rpm, but when im giving it some, it does my head in having to change up at 4krpm more annoying than anything!

Anyone any ideas what it is/how to fix it?

Its an M40 engine by the way (316i)

Bump, this gets more annoying everytime i drive the car

Like i say, the reluctance to rev under load will probably be the camshaft being worn.

Up to you whether you get it fixed (expect a bill of 2-300) or live with it..

Its very common on the m40 engine
