ages ago we were banging on about E30s vs GTis and someone mentioned Imprezas, and I said they were in a different league and on and on...

We discussed the pros and cons of thin-metalled plasticy Japanese cars, and I think I said the only accidents you ever had in an Impreza were big ones...

well here is a big one, but look how nice and strongly it all hung together for the passengers, even though the cars might appear thin and wobbly.................

as has been said by many, you can't compare cars by a traffic-light grand prix - it comes down to the drivers.

However even an early UK turbo with 208bhp would destroy any E30 (Karens or any M3 included) off the line and on the twisties, because it can put down the power.

Racing on the M4 isn't exactly a test of... well anything actually.

Even if I was in a Ferrari, you'd beat me on the M4 because my license is something I'd like to keep.

you serious??

only 208 bhp it's a 2.0 turbo right?

just look at a mitsu evo 2 250 bhp 2.0 turbo cheaper than an impreza

and way faster 8)

The Evo 2 has got to be about a K plate as for the same price for a R or P plate for a scoob. The Evo is more expensive to run aswell

the Jap cars get a bit complicated...

the Imprezas shipped to the UK by Subaru used to run in a very poor state of tune; the 'classics' up to 2001 had at most 215BHP / 214 lb/ft

The 'Japanese' Impreza sold in Japan was 280 BHP, and this is the one that is always compared with the EVOs; you can get both here in the UK because individuals and small companies ship them in from Japan.

Prodrive do various official tune-ups for the Impreza, but anyone can get a classic modded for very little money....

The point I was TRYING to make with that link to Ebay was how STRONG the cars are, even though they seem flimsy/plasticy, they aren't.

I reckon a Scooby would generally get done from a set of lights - these cars are becoming the most common performance car, their values are dropping, along with the skill of the driver!!

..Oh yea, remember the newer Scooby that drove into a house?! That car was well solid!

Admittedly i have seen a 17 yr old with a new scoob for his b'day and he drove it like a complete idiot. Soon we'll be playing where's wolly amongst all the scoobs on the road. I've had some funny looks from the old bill just through the sound of MY exhaust but the sound of the scoobs is f'ing loud, the old bill pull them over to admire the car not to give him a back hander, :hammer:

values are dropping, usually beacuse they have been owned by ahem careless drivers - I didn't say they were a good investment :D

The Mtech1/Sport is a MUCH more sensible car to own.....

An AWD car will beat any 2WD car 'off the lights', because you can put the power down - have you ever been in a launched AWD?

My father has a Lancer Evolution VI and although I haven't been in too many fast cars to compare it too, it does seem very quick. I have been in an E36 M3 and the Evo would easily leave that behind in most acceleration tests. It isn't the fastest car ever but I doubt many E30's, even with engine mods or swaps, would stay with it (except for the E36 M3 engined ones maybe above 100mph). It dynoed (on a reliable dyno  ) at 170kW (228hp) at the wheels so considering the loss through the AWD I think the claim of 206kW (276hp) is a bit low, maybe 220kW, and it has about 380Nm (280lb/ft) torque too. They are supposed to do low 13sec 1/4 mile times. My fathers car probably cost less than it would cost me to get an E30 and do an E36 M3 engine swap and some suspension mods as well and on a race track the Evo would still probably be as quick.

I am not trying to say this or any other Japanese car is great, best car, etc., infact this is more an information type post :). I'm just saying that they (Evo and STI) are quick cars and performance wise are more than the majority of E30's could ever hope for. The standard WRX (maybe Impreza turbo over there?) is a different story though and I am sure an E30 could go that quick, they are supposed to understeer a bit too so the E30 could be the nicer drive as well.

Everybody mentions the interior on these cars but I actually like the interior on the Evolution V and VI.

Each to their own, my m8 used to have a P1, I never actually got a go in it before he rolled it through a wall..

I see scoobs every day... oh, another really noisy blue scoob.. big deal..

e30s I see 1 every 2 days maybe.. and they are always the same cars, white 318is, black 325 and red 325.. seen 1 other Touring and tbh that's about it.
As for the HP output, 208bhp is nothing for that block, that's just what they decided to get out of them, 100 bhp/litre is possible in a non turbo 2l (s14 in the m3 for example, and that's 13 years old design) e46 M3 engine is 100 bhp/litre more or less. With a turbo a 2l engine should be able to make 400bhp (Evo FQ400) however it doesn't have much to do with how much power but how it is delivered.
I don't race people so I don't know much about it, but I would think that 220bhp AWD turbo vs 220bhp RWD aspirated (Karans or M3) from the lights would be something like this:
AWD takes lead 1st/2nd gear due to more grip, RWD should make up difference due to less drivetrain loss and better power delivery. Only a thought but it would depend on so many things, driver and tyres being the main 2. A RWD car with 265 rubber should launch pretty well provided you didn't corkscrew something doing it :)

this was at high speeds.....100-140...... scooby appeared to have nothing... we got off at same junction... guy said he was very shocked and flat out the whole time

ive played with a sti import also from standstill and i was soundly pasted...
it was 280bhpo though, and i was running an open diff and spinning up everywhere

plus in a 4wd car u can just hold it on the rev limiter and drop the clutch and away u go.... u can never do this in a rwd car as the 4wd guy will have done the 1/4 before u start moving...particularly in a torquey 2.7 which will jusyt keep spinning 8O in the wet i get beaten by 320s......LOL

still get to a corner though and i know which car id rather be in, i dont give a sh1t bout straight line speed..... real men do it in the corners

I agree with everything you said Karan...

...except which car to be in in the corners :D

no matter what you do to an E30, it's a very old design at the back

the same driver can go round corners faster in AWD, and if you are on the limit in whatever car, that's your 'real man or woman' point, (whatever that means)

yes it's 'easier' to go round corners in AWD, but there still comes a point where the physics of chassis/grip runs out, and the drivers skill comes into play

I think that was the point I made in the original thread... you can have fun at the limit in an E30 at speeds which WON'T kill you - in an AWD, that limit is so much higher that when it goes wrong it's going to hurt (as can be seen in my link at the top)

but the Impreza is still a drivers car.... it just happens to be an idiots car as well (actually after seeing that PINK E30 on Ebay, the E30 is proven to be an idiots car as well)

just because something is cheap and accessable, it doesn't mean it is no good
