Unfortunatly Iain can't do these anymore, any ideas for a lightened flywheel withought going for a mad motorsport one that need all sort of custom gubbins, any one else handy with a lathe and fancy a few £££'s?
Don't mindmad motrosport ones as long as I don't have to faff with anything else.
Ideas people? Ta.

Im sure if you pm BBB he'd be able to tell you who's running one. Maybe james (M50 turbo touring) is. It'd be a prime candidate for one since they both know each other.

I'm interested in one of these too. Maybe worth trying a group buy? Also what clutch would be best mated to these?

Cool thanks Oze.
Shorty - theres two types on the ebay link one for stock clutches and one for smaller diamerter 'race' clutches.
I am only interested in the flywheel for stock clutches and iirc its only 900g more anyway. I don't want to have to faff around changing anything else and loosing drivability.

That looks identical to the one I've got!
Talk to TTV about having one made, I reckon that's who has made the ones in the ebay link.
Think mine cost £220 odd.

cool, let me know if you get anywhere on the drive pulleys, they don't list any for the e30 and I don't know what size an M20 needs. If the price is good I might get a set too.

I've been talking to a fella in the States about clutches and flywheels. He is getting back to me this week. I'll let you know what He comes up with but they are very light. Might try a group buy there if theres interest.

why? .......just couriousshorty73 wrote:Looks like I'll be getting some under drive pulleys as well then!
I also miss some hard facts on the website. i.e. How much lighter?
How much improvement on inertia?
Don't want to know'em, but it's easy to make a statement. I want to know exactly what I get before I part with my money.

I've been looking for somewhere that can do underdrive pulleys for an e30. I'm sure I don't have to explain the benefits to you Uwe?UweM3 wrote:why? .......just couriousshorty73 wrote:Looks like I'll be getting some under drive pulleys as well then!

If you know of anywhere that does them off the shelf then let me know.
As for the clutch/flywheels I will be keeping my options open for the best quality for a good price. Not worth skimping on that. Been quoted a reasonable price roughly £750 for a clutch and flywheel that weighs in at 8kg all in. I'll see what comes up.

that's the point, WHAT benefits? I have so far not seen anybody with real life gains coming from underdrive pulleys on a BMW E30.shorty73 wrote:I've been looking for somewhere that can do underdrive pulleys for an e30. All I have seen is not charging batteries enough, but this won't bother you anyway.

I've read a bit about them in a book by John Lawes (competition car electrics) where he talks of the gains and benefits of using them.
As my car is pretty much stripped as much as possible and all the "cheap and easy" horsepower has been acheived (cam, manifold, chip, etc) then if an underdrive pulley can free up 1bhp then that's still a gain and if it free's up a little weight then that's another. As Tesco's rightly say (in a Bob Hoskins voice) "Every little helps"

each to their own mate. I personally think they are useless. I would rather shed 10kgs off the car for the money than gaining 1bhp.shorty73 wrote:I've read a bit about them in a book by John Lawes (competition car electrics) where he talks of the gains and benefits of using them.

I do not say there is no place for proper sized and light weight pulleys, I just don't think for the type of car you have it will not be worth the money

Clutch and flywheel for 750 is it just a std clutch as there is no way you could do a triple plate clutch and aluminium flywheel for that, i do JB Racing and they are close to double that for a racing triple plate and flywheel ?
i would question the quality for that price

The price is not in stone. Looking at having one made by Clutchmasters similar to what they have been using in E36 and E46 club racing cars. Not a full on "race " clutch as I can't be bothered with all the cost and hassle of servicing one every season.
It's a twin plate ceramic with a light flywheel made by ClutchMasters in the States. I have no experience of they're quality but I'll dig around and get some advice.
As for the pulleys...."The pulley on an alternator can be increased in size to allow it to spin at a slower speed with relation to the engine..........Our race machine is seldom at idle, uses the top half of the rev range far more often, and has less equipment to run combined with a smaller battery to charge. Therefore running a larger pulley will run the alternator slower, dragging less power from the engine. It will be at it's optimum charging speed at a higher rpm (useful in a race engine), and less prone to failure. All in all it would appear to be a useful modification."
From the above book by John Lawes , Lecturer in Motorsport Engineering and an Instructor in Aviation Engineering specialising in electrical systems.
He's selling nothing (except his book) so I have no reason to doubt his knowledge (or yours Uwe!). If he was flogging them I might too be sceptical.
