Project: Rear Mount Turbo 327i

PROJECT UPDATE.............
Bad news!!!!

The head needs a rebuild!!!! Or at least a change of rockers and camshaft and anything else thats been creamed.
Seems it was starved of oil at some point so its either a rebuild or a replacement head. GUR.
This means I wont be racing around with a proper e30 for some time to come
I suppose, on the brighter side I now have time to build a megasquirt someday and try self tuning (as apposed to handing over £1000 to a mechanic for a day or two's work)
Thanks for all the help lads! I couldnt have done any of this without you help and support

Well.... Hero for trying something different.... and its gotta have its advantages! but im just not in love with an 8 foot intake system! Lag will be horrific with the turbo having to fill so much more space to get the same raise in boost! and as for the posibility of leaks! well thats self explanitory.... im not saying its a shite idea im just saying there are some issues that it will be very interesting to see how easily you overcome them!

Thanks man!
And now the bottom end is giving trouble!!! It wont turn over at all. The starter seems fine. All I get is a "chug" and no turn at all. This is after we heard a crazy noise after idling at 4000rpm for a while. Theres a 325 head and block for sale in Ireland for £200 so it looks like Im just going to scrap the 2.7 (my first love).
While all of this was happening I was thinking,....
Could I twin turbo at some stage? Put a (small) turbo in the usual place to spool early and the (large) rear turbo to take over after 3000rpm. I hear the new diesel twin turbo acts in similar ways.
My other option is to buy new uprated internals for the 2.7. Tappets/ springs/ rods/ crank. Looks like at least 1500£ for the lot. But that more money!!

Iv taken the sump off today to find out why the crank will only turn half rotation. I had the car running yesterday and while idling at 4000rpm for a few mins we heard a very worrying noise coming from the engine. Now it just goes "chug" once when turned on. Turing the crank by hand will only move half rotation and stop dead in either direction.
Maybe a valve has dropped? Although I dont hear anything when rotating. There is an air leak from one of the cylinders. An oily hiss when the piston moves.
The car has been sitting up for 40 days (turbo project) and has only recently been turned on. Still N/A. The only part that had been replaced since was the loom connecting the injectors to the main loom. And Iv put in 325i plugs (which Iv found out were not suitable for the 2.7 block) I think the car was running extra extra rich. Have I detonated?

Iv just bought the plug and play megasquirt from DIYEFI. I have yet to sort out what it is thats wrong with the motor.

My project took a bit of an upset a while ago, timing went off and Iv creamed the head and a piston. Iv been donated a 325i head and eta pistons so I should be back on track soon. The turbo is mounted and pipes are setup so now its just a case of getting the "megasquirt in a box' connected and tuned (after i fix my engine!)
Im not sure if Il just rebuild the 2.7 the proper way. the setup i bought was stock eta bottom end with a 323 head which is the least effective way of using the 2.7cc. I have a spare 325i engine. Always nice to have one just lying around.
Im gonna move into a warehouse/ shed soon so the winter should produce some good pimping days! Il post some pics after I get back from rainy thailand

Project was not finished in the end! I have rebuilt the engine. The biggest problem I found was getting the correct oil pressure back to the mr2 turbo. 1st I under fed and ruined a turbo. Then I over oiled the 2nd turbo and gave up after a crap bearings rebuild. The first time we set it up we had lots of air coming from the charge even at idle so it did seem to work. A regular turbo would have taken the oil pressure straight from the block but my choice of turbo was my downfall.
