Hmm, running too retarded can be just as dangerous as too far advanced as it gives the exhaust valves a real firey blast.
Run like it for too long and the heads can fall off!

Well, I had to set it to something and in the lack of any better info at the time it got just got more and more retarded until I wasn't hearing nasty noises. The fine tuning will come. But point taken, I'm sure there are some areas I can add more advance to.

MSQ looked clean, nothing I could see that would cause anything.
Resets are 99% of the time ign related, I didn't believe it but it's been proven time after time.
I totall agree with Alex re the sparks, the map you use really ramps down on boost, you should be able to run much more advance and you will need to asap.
I'd add in a two too all of the VE buckets on boost, pull the AFRS into the 12 to be safe and then adjust the timing up, maybe a trip to your personal RR would be the best plan all round.
As for the resets I can only assume a HT wire is arcing or something on the ign isn't quite right, I had a busted coild pack last time and it took some working out as it was random symptoms.
Still can't believe how hot it's all getting and there's me worrying about getting to 40'c!
My laptop packed up bigtime last night, bloody things, off to get another today......more money......

Cheers Mark. I'll add some extra advance in there.
I'll give a through look over the ignition system, gonna post up on msextra forums too. Coils, leads and plugs i think I have some spares for all of them. Funny how it only started to happen after the blower went on. Might take off the boost pipe and run it NA to see if I get the same.
Driving it around you can feel she's gonna be so nice when this is all working!
Sorry to hear about the laptop dude!!

No worries, will be picking up another tonight after work, £75 too, well happy, went into Pc world, curries, comet etc, they all want £300+ and everything is on vista, which I can't stand. They didn't understand that I didn't need internet cards, wireless shite and 20 inch screens!hoshy wrote:Cheers Mark. I'll add some extra advance in there.

What sort of boost were you running when you killed it ?
I reckon it won't be long before my head gasket goes. The car is coming up 130k and I've given it a good pasting. Got a spare head, gasket, bolts etc lined up though

Well I took the pipe off and drove home flawlessly. I'm wondering if heavy accel is causing my input pipe to collapse - I guess if the charger couldn't get any air then that's gonna load up the engine and act like a break which is exactly how it feels. I'll check it out.

Various pressures killed it BUT I can attribute some other of the failures too:hoshy wrote:What sort of boost were you running when you killed it ?

First: Too much boost! Ant & I ran up over 1.3bar on the day of fitting the holset, lasted 30 mins.
2nd / 3rd / 4th - The head I fitted was over over skimmed and CR was well to high. Small IC didn't help with IATS at all.
5th - Was playing with sparks and didn't have the map right, after 4k and 10psi the timing came up too much, also IC was too small
6th - Still going strong, fitted HUGE ic, 3 inch charge pipes to go with 3inch exhaust. Also sorted wasted sparks out properly and have learned a lot more.
It's now holding 10psi till the redline in every gear and runs @ 11.9-1 AFRS at WOT across the range.
Sparks are set to around 10' once on boost, I expect these to raise around peak torque to 14/15 when dyno tuned.
Got a new laptop too, 1ghz - AMD - 20gig HD - 256m ram and it flies!!
Well happy, plus got it for £50 too.

Mark - wow i didn't realise you'd killed so many
Nice work on the laptop - with all the new ones coming in from 300 you can get some great bargains on the older stuff. Not like a few years ago - laptops used to hold value too much imho
Dave - yeah when I get these problems sorted I'm gonna be over to ace for sure! Might even wash the car too

yes they did. Was interesting to see how much ignotion you could run at WOT. With my current intake temps there's no chance but it'll be sorted soon enough. Do you have any idea that the fuel figure units are? Or maybe what sort of pulse width you're running?
I think that ebay cooler is too much for me
I wannt stick with 60mm pipework all round. I do even have a mahoosive land rover defender IC but couldn't see an easy place to fit it.

If you have a look at where you get peak torque, see what boost you have there and look up in the Pressure Compensation table what that knocks out of the timing, that should give you a maximum advance I reckon.

Hey Quaser. Yeah things have changed a bit
Still got some work to do mind.
I guess first question is do you want peak power or low-end grunt. Eaton roots chargers are just like bigger displacement engines and things like Rotrex chargers will give you more of a turbo feel.
In basic terms you need a charger, mounting kit, charge cooling, management system... Details depend on many factors though dude.

Well mate. I had to hunt high and low for somebody to fabricate brackets for me and in the end was done by a zoner I don't know if he's interested in more work or not to be honest. it's quite a tough thing to do as it's not something you can just bolt on.
If you want to bolt on I think ant is running some kits. and to be fair the money I have and will spend on mine i'd recommend you go with a kit unless you're serious about the diy/learning bit.
