What do you think about mudflaps? I have recently bought an e30 and it has proper bmw flaps fitted do you think I should leave them on or take them off? ta

Popularist opinion on here is that they are to be removed immediately and burnt at the stake as they are apparently rust traps. I had a couple of E30s with them and quite liked them, as they keep alot of muck off the sills so it's a personal thing. I didn't find that they caused any rusting, although I regularly clean my cars to avoid too much mud building up.

I agree with speedtouch. Both my cars have mudflaps and I regularly hose down the underside of my cars to get rid of any muck that has accumulated. If you aren't going to hose down the underside of the car you may be better off removing them.

I removed the front ones on mine when I got it, a load of cack was caught behind the offside bracket and wrecked the bottom of the wing and a bit of the 'pseudo jack platform'. I've seen some aftermarket ones that are a reasonable facsimile of the bmw ones but don't have these brackets, they are just clipped on, might be a better bet.
I think they suit the car, especially chromies.

I have just replaced them on mine. Removing them let me check the rustproofing and clean everything. Without them fitted the side of the car quickly gets streaked with grime. As others have said, if you fit them you need to clean them.

Keep them,clean them,simple.
My Touring has them and I think they look good, plus the fronts at least stop the sides of the car being shot blasted with road grit. I don't think the backs do a great deal TBH but I just prefer the look of the car with them on.

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...
If you are to take them off - 1st bag at purchasing them if they are still useable.tomcat9999 wrote:What do you think about mudflaps? I have recently bought an e30 and it has proper bmw flaps fitted do you think I should leave them on or take them off? ta

I took mine off to find a small amount of rust hidden on the front wings. No amount of cleaning would have prevented this. Although now the car gets dirty really quickly without the mudflaps.
I have a set in good nick if anyone wants

Says it all really. I had them on the touring and had no probs with rust, as long as the car is kept clean (as it should be) it should be fine.
I think I should get a set for the cabby.........
Are they the genuine items and do they fit a 320ise 1990 saloon?toby wrote:I took mine off to find a small amount of rust hidden on the front wings. No amount of cleaning would have prevented this. Although now the car gets dirty really quickly without the mudflaps.

Yes, not sure what they are worth though.hennabm wrote:Are they the genuine items and do they fit a 320ise 1990 saloon?toby wrote:I took mine off to find a small amount of rust hidden on the front wings. Exactly.Chris-W wrote:If you have flaps it's important to ensure you clean behind them thoroughly, otherwise you should consider having them removed.
I will put my mud flaps in the For Sale Section soon. Haven't got access to them at the moment.

Mudflaps are for the Maestro brigade. They look shit, make you look about 76 years old and trap rust. I automatically remove them and stick them on Ebay. The 20 quid they fetch pays for a bit of fuel.
So the side of the car gets dirty? A process known as 'washing the car' solves that.
There are different types of rustflaps as well.
The rear ones are basically 2 types, chrome or plastic bumper. The front ones are saloon/touring without sill skirts, saloon/touring with the plastic skirts (SE saloons and 320i/325i Touring), and Convertibles which are different again. Plus of course the 325iX.

Some years back whilst I was market trading I ran a Nissan Vanette.(well,it WAS a diesel)I returned to it one day after a day's trading at Cleethorpes to find written in the muck on the rear window, 'wanted,4 niggers to use as mudflaps, must be willing to travel'...wonder what it meant...still gives me a chuckle..
Youth is wasted on the young.
I agree with the earlier posts - they seem to be rust traps althought I prefer the look on them on !

Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.
Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....
