MOT failed on one rear wheel bearing. I was going to do it myself, but it looks like it could be more hassle that I want right now.

How much should it cost? The garage have quoted me £190+VAT

It can certainly be a **** of a job, but £190 is too much for someone with the right tools. Get a better quote...

I just went to a local garage for a quote. They refused to quote, and just said that it would be 38+vat per hour x however long it takes.

My bearing was £11.50+vat and a couple of hours fannying about, could do it again in about an hour i guess :)

I thought my quote of £110+ was bad...... 190+? i think that could have been what's known as a F*CK OFF! quote

I just put 2 new rear wheel bearings on mine last weekend, I did get burgled by the motor factors I went to in Norwich for £25 each, but they are SKF bearings so at least a decent brand. As I already had the trailing arms off the car it was a bit of chew on getting the hub off and messing about in the press, but they were out eventually, the old man said it would have been a lot easier with them still on the car.

Thanks for the comments. I think I will just do it myself. I have to meddle with the handbrake shoes anyway for the MOT.

A trip to B&Q will help you, some M12 threaded bar, nuts and washers (the big flat ones) and a selection of large sockets... this little lot makes winding the drive flange back into the bearing so easy with zero chance of damaging the shiney new bearing, mine was a VTECH bearing form GSF, never heard of them myself so we will see how long it lasts.
