Only thing is, it seems different to other "satin black" cars I have seen? The rest seem to be very flat, whereas this seems to have a bit of a shine. Thats why I was asking about using a clearcoat, cos if I do it, I dont want it to look like a home-made job!

the other ones you have seen may be matt black

satin paint holds that shine and no clearcoat finish is needed, whereas other flat black cars will have matt paint which has more of a chalkboard flat finish.

And yes you should definatly have it done as that car looks amazing!

Thats ok - I have 16x9 borbet b wheels, so figure it would look pretty cool with those on.

Having read through, it seems it may be matt black, but with a matt black clearcoat on - I'm off to find some of that then.......

'Flatning binder' can be added to Jet black to achieve that finish...

I made up a load at work only today

Believe me I have looked through every colour chip and the one I chose 'Honda' is best

Slight blueish black shine to it

* All things like Strut brace (which I painted today) are going that colour.... Do it do it

You know, when I posted this I thought there may be a negative response to it, but having seen all you guys egging me on, I think I will seriously look into it.

I was going to go all black, leave the borbets as they are, and do the calipers/rear lights red and engine bay details red/chrome

So, OBs - where can I look up the relevant colours and products needed? If you could share some info that would be great!

hmmm i was gonna repaint my car in a gloss black later in the year but i think now i may stick with the satin black i currently have but put a matt kinda clearcoat on it.

Thats nice dude, don't change it back! So is it a satin paint you used, or a matt? This is what I'm confused by at the moment.

satin black. did it myself using a 2HP compressor. there are a few matt black acrs going around my area and the satin looks far better IMO, has a semi shine to it

projectmick one thing i would say is its a total pain to keep clean. water marks, dirt, dust, finger prints etc.

biggest problem in my street is s0dding cats walking all over it, dusty paw prints all over it.

Depends if you are going down the 2 pack route?

If so... Paint, hardner and thinners - I will get you the colour code if you want the Honda one?

You would obviously need a Compressor and spray gun etc if you do it your self

A motor factors should be able to supply the materials needed, Its easier to spray a Matt / Satin finish

Im guessing you have 'basecoated' it?

What paint have you used?

If Im right and it is a basecoat which would need 'clear' over the top, again a flattining binder should be used to achieve the semi gloss finish you require

Or as I said before mix a gloss black with said binder instead

I have been thinking about satin paint for a while. Wasn't thinking about black though, something a bit different. Here is a link to a paint manufacturer that specialises in satin an flat paints.

Hi again Mick, Ill explain it the best I can

At work I currently use DuPont paint, most paint systems will be similar.

Solid colours - These are your 'Straight' colours i.e non metallic, Mica pearls and Pearls etc.
Solid colours are mixed 3:1 with hardener and 10% thinner - They are your Primary colours including White and Black, they do not require Clear coating as they can be polished and waxed to achieve a shine (for arguments sake we will call Clear coat a Solid colour, as It is mixed the same and does the same job so to speak)

Base coats - Can be either Solvent based which is mixed 2:1 with a Base coat thinner or Waterborne which with the DuPont system dosnt require thinning.
Base coats when applied will lay 'flat' and give you a Semi gloss finish, but they will offer no protection from day to day life, pretty much like wood if you don't Varnish it.
Besides Water base will just wash off in the rain

Aerosol - These are also know as 1 pack, like above come in Solid colours but also includes Matt and Satin, then obviously Base coat metallics and Clear, Aerosol is alright for small jobs but I wouldn't recommend it for a repaint
Also aerosol will not offer the same amount of protection over a length of time as 2 pack.

Matt, Satin and Semi gloss - Which are mainly used on Door / Window mouldings, Bumpers and Bump strips, these finishes are achieved by using a Flattening binder, which is an additive that can be added to either Solid colour or Clear coat (as said before we will treat them as the same)
For example if you were to get a glass of Pure fruit juice which would be like a Solid colour or Water acting as a Clear coat and added milk the end result would be an Opaque effect, the same applies.

Matt - 70%
Satin - 50%
Semi gloss - 25%

So all in all working with the Black car theory, if you were to spray a 'Satin' base coat but then Clear coat the car you would still end up with a Gloss finish, but by adding 50% of Flattening binder to the Clear it would then make it Satin (but maybe more on the Matt side)

On a paint scheme you get around about 40 tinters which cover the whole colour spectrum, with each Car manufacturer you obviously get a colour code which when typed in to a Computer gives you the 'ingredients' of which tinters go together to make that particular colour, for example a Solid white car could have White, Blue, black, Red and so on... Just to make say Alpine white.

The Honda colour I mentioned is a Solid colour, but with either of the ''Solid colours'' I mentioned you would still be able to Polish and Wax it as normal.

I hope that 'Clears' a few things up
