Nah, its only £900 in the first year for any new cars in the top band. Its then £440 a year for subsequent years so the max anyone pays a year after the first year is £440 I think?

Mines in that band...I've seen it jump from £210 (my previous 04 plate M3) to £300 when I bought the Z4M last year (same emissions, same engine), and thats now jumped to £440...thats four times what it costs to tax a Fiesta 1.25, even though i only put out double the emissions. And that assumes I drive the same distance too.

Rip off.

One of the (many) reasons I sold my E46 and replaced with an E30 recently was due to the offensive amount of car tax that the government was going to start hitting me with.

There's something strangely satisfying about halving my tax bill but doubling my emissions. :) :)

How long will it be until the car owner is faced with a carbon surcharge at the MOT test, based upon the actual emission of their particular car?

"Right Mr. Smith, the CO2 reading is x%, therefore if you require an MOT certificate that will be £500 please"

That would get rid of loads of old nails.

It's bound to happen.

The big change will be when RFID number plates are introduced. Every time the engine is started it will be logged, and all kind of info. will be submitted to roadside interrogation devices. The impact on the environment (or rather the capability to generate revenue for HM Gov.) can then be calculated very easily for individual vehicles.

Our great friend technology has made it remarkably simple for the control and measure loop to be exercised by anyone in authority.

Well them in authority can go f*** themselves... :x

When that happens I'll be going abroad, along with probably every other non- Government / Civil Servant tax payer.

my vectra just sneaks into the old rules so £105ish for 6 months? Just as well, as we have four cars at the moment (daily driver and e30 each) and all of them require taxing within 5 weeks of eachother! (and MOT'ing within 2 months of eachother )

Well, I'm greatly relieved that E30 owners have got off so lightly considering how everyone is being royally stuffed in every other direction. While I fully agree with the comments about that low-life, toe-rag of a pitifully failing Prime Minister, we have to be aware that he's been shafting us mercilessly from the very moment he arrived at No 11. No one complained when there was enough cheap money sloshing around to pay his piratical taxes, but now that has dried up and starting to hurt it's a different story.

Blair and Brown came as a package - a smooth talking con-man and his devious trickster-mol. Stuffing motorists via RFL and fuel taxes has always been a favourite means of raising revenue to pay for failed policies, but these two took it to another level. Now we have that astonishingly incompetent prat Darling to worry about and you can bet your sweet bippy his eyes will be on the motorist to provide funds for his mistakes. Trouble is, how many voted this pack of hyenas in and then allowed them to stay too long? Did no-one see this coming? It may have been a great party, but be prepared for one mother of a hangover - it could last a very, very long time.

Anyway, back to E30s - it looks as though a pal who drives a very smart and extremely quick MG is 'on the turn'. He's about to be taxationally fooked and is seriously looking at E30s. Dismissed at first because E30s were "old, slow cars", he's realised that his motor is plastic crap with cheap add-ons and engine technology that is equally as old, but far less refined. I'm not going to be smug, I'll just point him in this direction when he's ready.
