I'm sure there are many on here that can answer better than me (cue Sal!) but my basic understanding is that it replaces the AFM (Air Flow Meter). The AFM measures the amount of air flowing into the engine by a mechanical flap. The MAF (Metered/Mass Air Flow??) measures the actual mass of air flowing by use of a heated wire (dont know how that works though). It's therefore less restrictive and quicker to respond and as a result the throttle response is much better. The problem is that it doesn't interface directly to the ECU and so a seperate chip is required to do the conversion. Can be done though - a few on here have done it.

Not worth it on a 325i dude, you're better off camming and chipping.

If you have already done that then increase to 2.7 is the next hike in power.
