cheap tip to dynamatting a car

go to homebase or any home diy store and purchase a roll of adhesive felt it is about Ԛ£12 - Ԛ£15 and is about 20 cm wide 5mm thick by one metre long. it works exactly the same and is loads cheaper than the real stuff.

to be fair its not the same.

i've tried both and the dynamat extreme has no rivals in terms of performance.

if you want a tip:

glue thin sheets of mdf to the body panels after applying dynamat extreme . this wil add to the deadening effect
particularly effective on db drag cars

yes simon it will. i've heard a double layered dynamat extreme saxo that was quiter than mercs i've ridden in.... till you turned on the system - it filled the car from the front seats back.

dynamat is good - better than anything out there. dynamat extreme is better. i tend to extreme around any speakers and dynamat original the rest of the car.

depends on how far you want to go. for a good general improvement you need only use it in the centre of any large flat panels - as that's where vibration (like a drum skin) will occur the most e.g. door skins, rear quarters and also where any speakers are located. the floor pan tends to be thick, strengthened with ribs and covered with carpet which on e30s is fairly well sound proofed already so it's not key by any stretch of the imagination.

if you want as quiet as possible though dynamat everywhere and do all the edges. to give you an idea you've heard mine and i've gone for the centres of the floorpan panels, double thickness on outer door skins (because of the builds) and up to the edges everywhere else. i used about 12 or 13 rolls of original and 4 or 5 rolls of extreme as i recall.

1 roll is 4 sq ft and about 20 inches wide. dynamat original retails at about 15 and extreme is about 25. find it in any car hi-fi dealers.

You can buy sound insulation from BMW for very very little money, its lighter and much better than Dynamat. (for reducing road noise)

I want to dynamat my entire car to kill as much road noise as possible but i wont pay stupid money for dynamat/brown bread coz i think its a bit of a rip-off. I'll find an audio shop thats going bust and buy some at a knock-down rate or something. I dont care if you call me tight, but i wont pay Ԛ£300 to soundproof my car. fuk that!

From the odd time I've used it to get rid of vibration on my door panels on previous cars and it really is the shizzle. I've often thought about how good it would be to do the whole car but surely that would be really heavy?

Has anyone got any idea what sort of weight is invloved in getting a good coverage in an E30?

Dynamat is fakin heavy mate! i know that much for sure! dynamat a whole car and your talking 100+ kilos easily

i know this might sound really odd

but i've heard household wall insulation foam works quite well!!! (not being sarcastic).

i know dynamat is good but you can't dynamat everything - plus its a pain in the ar$e cutting it to shape isn't it??? where the foam expands to the right size/shape??

Wouldn't that be too thick for most places in a car. If you stuck that under the carpets you'd halve the height in the cabin.

brownbread is the best soundproofer ive ever used its from the usa but i think its available over here its alot bigger than the poxy sheets of dynomat but i done all my old sport in it and it worked perfect!! i did have 2500watts of bass and 3 amps at the time lol!

How does this brownbread stuff compare with dynamat for weight? How much is it? where can I get it from in the uk?

So many questions, but this has really got me interested. I've got some quality ICE in my car that sounded mint in my mk3 golf but sounds shite in my bmw

flash tape is the way to go as it's alot cheaper from wicks, i got a fair a mount of it in my boot,double layered.
a friend of mine is a stereo fitter by trade and uses this stuff in all his cars so it must be good. he had an xr2 which we completly striped to a bare shell in side and done every bit of metal you can to inc the roof, you can get a spray type(can't remember the name)which is good for the bits you can't see/get to.

Also what is it like in terms of weight compared to dynamat?
