So yes, OK, I'm not thick, and know it can't be the tappets. But it sounds EXACTLY like tappets/injectors... yet a little pressure on the clutch pedal (just enough to take the slack up in the cable, except there isn't a cable either...)
So what is it anyone? Mr Mooooore?
Tappets stop clicking when I put my foot on the clutch!

Wouldn't be something like the release bearing or perhaps a broken finger on the clutch cover would it?
Beware the ticky noises that sound like tappets, they turn into loud banging noises like big ends......and then into turbo conversions. Perfectly logical!

mine makes a clattering cam-like sound when idling in neutral. when put into gear, it shuts up. simply dipping the clutch has this affect too. also increasing the revs to about 1500rpm upwards shuts it all up.
i suspect it's a gearbox fault but haven't looked further into it.
