With 325i Sports fetching good money these days, how about a Sapphire cosworth for less money? I was watching a 4x4 1991 with 88k on the clock with a slight chequred history but the owner seemed upfront about it which went for £2550!!! Now thats cheap!

Ok its a Ford, and it aint built as well as an E30, but you can't beat the cossy for bang for buck. Once the head gasket issues have been sorted, and a decent turbo fitted (which are cheap now!!) they are pretty hillarious to own

and when sports were at bargain basement prices they werent bought by joy-seekers raped about and then flogged on when the temp needles started to soar due to the heads going?
ok so they rot, so do sports
it's tit for tat but at 2.5k I'd happily pick one up ok so it's not got a BMW badge on the front but if you want something that grips and goes it does exactly that. Look after it and it'll look after you.

Nissan Pulsars are good fun too if a little weak but bollocks to it they are fast little buggers and cheapish.. Jap turbo's seem to have gain a little bit of value again
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

My mate had one of these for around 6 years and not even once had it been driven like a normal car....soon as it left his driveway thats it all hell broke loose!!
Car was well known around my area...and also well known to the police, but they always saw it fly past them yet could never do nothing about it as by the time they turn to get the registration its long gone.

The engine on them cars also i must say are the bollocks!! 6 years worth of beating and also when it came to topping up the oil it never had the same kind put in it and the car was still running with no problem hitting 30psi you got to respect them engines!!

Shame he went and sold it recently, that car was something else!!

Would take that over an e30 i must admit....shame they dont look as nice as e30's do....e30 cosworth lump now where talking winkeye

And they stop a damn sight better than an E30 too, M3 included. We are talking standard brakes here for both.

You also dont need it chipped and injector'd to high heaven either, a BBR stage 1 chip and -31 actuator set to 16psi and there isn't much on the road which will stay with you

Fully agree with Fuzzy. This is a price band that will buy you more expense.

Also agree with Fuzzy on the fact that a well/correctly maintained Cosworth engine can take a fair amount of hard driving as the last owner of mine(used everyday with no mechanical issues) was a MR J. Clarkson !

Don't get me wrong , I love the Cossy ( Well the orginal RS and RS500 and ofc the Escort ) . They are rare as rocking horse sh*t in a hamsters cadge down here as most of them had been trashed to oblitartion so hence my comments about them being thrashed.

Why not just get a 325i, does it really need to be a sport.

+1

I have always liked Cosworths but even though you can buy knackered ones cheap these days I don't think you could run one on the same sort of budget as a 325i.

If you drive a 325i be it a sport or not and a cosworth in a hard fashion, there is no budget. It took me 2 weeks to obliterate a euro car parts guibo on my 327.

Sheps I dont know about brakes standard only even been in cos' with uprated parts

If I was looking for a fast 2WD turbo at that money I'd get a Fiat Coupe 20V turbo. 220bhp out of the box and minimal upgrades (piggyback ECU, dump valve) will get you to 280bhp. After that they need a meatier fuel pump and probably a larger turbo/FMIC etc etc. If you're insane you can swap in a 2.4 block and go to 500bhp+ but I suspect that might break the budget :)

FWD wrongness - but bloody rapid and handle OK with their viscodrive LSD-alike front setup. Plus - there are at least 2 4WD conversions on the roads in the UK. You'll know if you try and race one :)

OK, I'm biased - I have a 16VT but they need more tuning to get the initial gains and mine is stock @190bhp
E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap :)

but when you go to accelerate out of a bend right on the money, set-up for rear end break-away ready to snatch 4th, you think bugger, i'm not facing the hedge I was intending to and that tree I usually just miss with my rear bumper, I'm actually going head on into!

Bob, I used to track a 3dr back in 1988/89. The car was only fitted with standard brakes and were WELL upto the job even with standard ford pads. This was with a car with 330bhp.

They actually used to run the rear pads down quicker than the fronts. Have the ABS kicking in all over the place, but just puch the pedal harder and boy, they would pull up.

Having said all this, I havn't driven a decent one in years (probably since my original one when it was 2 yrs old) but I have alot of happy memorys.

An original 325i sport do drive better than the same age cossy though, and wear thier miles far better. Don't get me wrong, I aint saying everyone go out and buy a cossy, or even a boring old Sierra for £50, but bang for your buck, it can't be ignored lol.

Another happy memory was driving a 500+bhp RS500 with it wheel spinning in 5th as it came onto full boost. It waould also spin the wheels inside the tyres!

i didnt get a shot but i was a passenger in an alleged 550bhp rs500 around knockhill.it was owned by the ballbag who did my engine conversion so that probably explains why i felt somewhat underwhelmed by its performance. probably nearer 400+ than 550
