Importing an e30

Hi guys. It's me again from South Africa. Just wanna find out if anyone knows what it would cost to import an e30 cabriolet from that side of the world to SA. The cabs we have here are not the same. When you drop the top, the B pillars do not fold down and the rear windows also does not come down. I so badly want a cabriolet but for this reason I won't buy one in SA. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated....

Also, whats the general prices of the cab's on that side?......

you will be looking at about 1000-1500 US dollar for sea freight charges, then your own countries import duties etc

contact your local branch of someone (international shipping/import agents) like Allied Pickfords for more exact details

I don't think it is possible to import and older car into South Africa. From my understanding you cannot important cars over 15 years old.

This is causing me issues as I am driving from London to Cape Town early next year in an '89 Landcruiser. I am pretty sure I will not be able to sell (legally!) the truck when I get there.

You can important older cars to Mozambique or maybe Namibia..

MOTOR VEHICLES: SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENS

No concession exists for returning South African Nationals/Permanent Resident holders (including persons normally resident in the Republic who go abroad to work or study) to import a motor vehicle without payment of Customs duty.

The vehicle (if second-hand) will also be subject to an import permit form the Directorate: Import & Export Control, Pretoria and a Letter of Authority (LoA) from the South African Bureau of Standards.

Returning residents are cautioned not to assume that import permits will be issued automatically as long as they undertake to pay the applicable duties. For the necessary application forms, see 'Documents Required'.

The import duties on motor vehicles are at present as follows:

Customs duty: 40%
Ad-Valorem Customs duty: on a sliding scale with a maximum of 20%
Please consult 'Import duties on motor vehicle' to see how these duties are calculated.

The vehicle has to be over 40 years old or for racing or a collectable car, showing that it a collectable car is the only way I see you being able to do this.

South Africa has a pretty large car manufacturing base and it is protect very well! In the spirit of "free Trade" obviously!

must be baur cabs you get over there then is it

That policy is in many African countries. I think its because they want to limit the amount of old cars on the road.

Thanks for the info guys. But can someone tell me how much will I pay for a decent e30 cab from that side of the world. I will do some more research on the shipping and stuff but it won't be worth it if I pay more for the shipping than the car itself!!!

it depends what you mean by a decent cab you could get a fairly good one for around £1500 mark
