Do these fit over the E30 51mm struts OK ?

http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_in ... 25a5af88ea

If i were to use my existing shocks what else do i need to buy besides the springs ?

Are my original rubber top mounts OK ?

Talking of springs, what i want to do eventually is have one set for the road and the other for track days. I don't want these so i can lower the ride height very low, i want if i can to be the same as where it is in the picture below.

What LBs/length springs should i start off with ?

Is it worth trying to find some where that will zinc plate the threads for me ?

I'm not too fussed for true coil overs on the rears but i want to try and get some of those adjustable perch type things(like i think you get with a H+R coil over set up ?) that let you use the coil over sized springs so i can have the fredom to play with the rears, where can i get these from ?

they fit mine ok but if your using the 2 1/4" springs you will need to machine down the nut that holds the damper in the strut, very easy to do.

these work on the rears also as adjustable perch, thats what i use.

I like the idea of the rear perch. Is the threaded bit welded in place? Is the spring top held in position in any way, or does it stay in place under compression pressure with the shock at full extesion? Cheers

Thanks for the info pictures, what length/LBs springs did you use and are they intended for road or track ?

I cut the original spring seats off the front struts but left some of the weld in place then just lowered the threaded tube onto that so no welding needed. The rear perches just sit on the swinging arm over the lump that the rubber boot fits over for the standard springs, you can see on the upper rear the spring is held the same way.

The spring and perch wont fall out even on full extension but i am going to cut down the original boots and refit them.

gunni sold me the springs and i cant remember what length they where (5" ish) i would have to measure them or maybe you could PM gunni and see if he knows. The car is for track mainly (i do commute every day in it) so i dont worry that the ride may be a little harsh on the road, lbs wise i think they are about 380lbs and 510lbs the dampers are bilstein but only cheap basic ones i think, they came with the car.

the threaded tubes that you see are cut down the ones you get from rallydesign are twice as long, i did not need that much adjustment so cut them in half and saved a few bob. winkeye

So you used one tube to do two struts ?

ye just bought one tube two spring seats and two lock nuts to do the front struts, and used the same for the rear perches.

looks like this which is enough adjustment for my needs, also using these springs means you can get almost any spring length and rate that you require.

bit of vid which shows the fronts working at a trackday.

That's cool that rally design let you buy bits seperately like that.

How have you secured the tube to the strut ?

Thanks for the video clip, i went around there ages ago in my e34 535, infact donny is only about 10mins down the road from me.

To say you were using slicks your body roll was nicely controled 8)

Have you also got uprated ARB's aswell ?

I have just dropped the tube over the strut its a very good fit so no movement, left enough weld from original spring pan to sit the threaded tube on so it can not slide down, it works a treat.

ARBs are standard and there is very little body roll which makes the car much more fun to drive on track, i am not saying its the perfect solution but on a budget its a big improvement over standard.

done about 15 to 20 trackdays on this setup and commute the car every day and have had no problems what so ever.
