m40 head rebuild

all the bits arrive tomorrow and i am about to rebuld my 1.8 m40 head i am changing the cam,rocker,tappets,spray bar,cambelt,etc.and have some questions
do i have to take the head off i dont intend to take the valves out so can the cam be changed with the head in situ.

are there any things i need to be aware of ie running in period i have a cam locking tool are there any special tools i will need

No problem doing all this with the head on.
Lube the new cam up well with special cam lube, or some hypoid gear oil.
Don't turn the crank over with the cambelt off of course, and make sure the new cam is bolted down turned to the same position as the old one.
You need a method of tensioning the cambelt properly.
Haynes manual has a method of doing this, using a spring balance.
