thanks for the number shep will get in touch if plans become firmer but i may get a puma for a more full on conversion.
KA is brand new atm 1500 miles so far so seems a touch silly to mod it yet maybe when the warrenty runs out winkeye

I am finding the Uni-Q to be as much as most people need for most applications.

Even big turbo applications are no problem.

I am now fitting these to E39 M5's, E46 M3's, S50 engined Z3M's running Mafless and with big carbon plenums without any problem. I am now trying to book in an E60 M5 aswell.

Next on the list is a Mitsubishi Evo-6 which will have launch control, anti lag and also different maps for different boost levels.

How good it will be really depends on how good the mapping is. You can generally assume that the more time a mapper takes the better it will be. I know that myself and Sheps generally take cars in for 2-3 days for mapping.

Standalone 'can' be better in some extreme cases but it depends on the application. There are situations where the standard ECU really does have to be junked but this will be rare.

The Uni-Q does not have one way to be configured. There are many stratagies.

Example - you can run an M20 without an AFM in Alpha N, you can have a MAP sensor or the good ol' MAF conversion.

You can run an E39 m5 without MAF's mapped on either TPS only or TPS and MAP sensor.

Turbo conversions are not an issue with the UniQ+ which can control electronic waste gates.

Having played around with a few standalones my personal opinion is that standalones should be the last option. You should try and retain the standard ECU as much as possible. Why? Your retaining the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars worth of research and development of the manufacturer. Generally cars with standalones never ever run aswell or as consistently as cars with OE ECU's. It takes a huge amount of effort to get a car with standalone to run well without any compromises.
To do it properly you need to experience (while mapping) a very wide range of intake& ambient temperatures, coolant temperatures (with varying top and bottom hose temps), altitudes etc etc.
You find yourself replicating what the manufactures spend thousands of hours doing to make a road car consistent and driveable. Hence......if you can leave the stock ECU in place and bully it with electronics then this will give consistent results.

Another area which people tend to over look is safety maps and compensations maps. Safety maps are pretty much impossible to setup on most standalones and compensations maps can be guessed but are never as good as the factory ECU maps.
Most modern ECU's are just brilliance. Even the primative MS42 Seimens unit as fitted to the M52TU engine has the ability to run when the MAF, lambda and both camshaft sensors fail. The most amazing thing is that even though the car feels a little slow it still drives smoothly! You knock out just one sensor on a standalone setup and you won't be going very far at all!
Standard ECU + Uni-Q + good mapping = driveability + consistency + power

It's a never ending debate all this! I think the proofs in the pudding and my shep's pie tastes fantastic :D

My plans? Hmmm, I'm gonna run it as is for a few years and then probably go balls deep and look into building a monster 300bhp+ S14 of some shape

Or would you be billing to give soem base line maps for the s14

does UniQ still have to be tuned by the special dealers like the Unichip does or can anyone do it?

It can only be tuned at Unichip dealers - for now.

M5pilot wrote:Just to add to this - Sheps and myself mapped another S14 with a MAXX Carbon airbox running on AlphaN using the Uni-Q.

The conversion is excellent to say the least and the sheer difference these carbon airboxes make once the fuelling and ignition maps have been altered is amazing.

We gained approx 22bhp and 20lb.ft on a standard engine with just the MAXX airbox and Uni-Q......and that incredible noise!

The Uni-Q conversion takes away the need for standalone systems.

Sal
Sal, I just completed another conversion on an S14 195hp standard car, but with the MAXX CF airbox and the Uni-Q as we did with the M3 at yours. It seems that around 20bhp and 20ftlbs is about whats expected from a standard engine and this conversion at peaks. But its not all about those numbers, its the way the car drives after the fuel and ignition is mapped including part throttles. The gains on the one I've recently done on part throttle were even more impressive than the one we did together, but I guess thats expected as the red car had a modified chip in already if I remember right?
