Well you've got the daddy of all headunits there i belive! i have the 9853r in my install! bit figdity these units but great features and superb sound control and reproduction!
Given that the headunit does not play dvds; you will require a screen that has a dvd slot; these can be very pricey; but you dont need a headunit with great sound quality; as you already have it; you dont really need to go for the likes of the ALPINE, PIONEER dvd players then tbh!
All these dvd players will have AUDIO OUT phonos; it all depends how much space money and time you have tbh. once the screen is obtained; in order for the sound to travel via your exisitng headunit you have a couple of options;
option 1
Very cheap option! Purchase a converter that converts the AI-NET connector to phono! readily available on ebay, this allows you to connect the audio out from the dvd to the headunit; but the audio is played via selecting CD CHANGER on the alpine headunit; now this can cause issues if say you have the IPOD CONNECTOR facility plugged in aswell.....refer to option 2
Option 2
Getiiing expensive: purchase an ALPINE multi input switcher. not sure of the official name; allows you to connect your ipod; cd changer and two other outputs and control all of them via the headunit. this way the DVD player has its own icon and channle and you dont loose the ability to use your IPOD too! sound reproudction and quality is considerably better; however marginal as the filters; if being used correctly will make the correct adjustments required!
hope this helps

Saboor,
i dont use the ipod facilty as it doesnt give the same quality as a decent cd does,
so basically i could buy a cheap DVD monitor off ebay, from china or something connect it up and it will do what i want? i take it that it will come up as a dvd icon on the menu instead of cd or tuner?
bit confussed,

in principal the link given above is correct; but its NOT THE ONE YOU NEED. you need a AI-NET to phono as you have the newer headunit; im sure they have that tooo!
All your headunit knows is that its receivng audio via an external source; it wont know its from a dvd or playstation or whatever!
when you ask the ALPINE to play the CD changer the audio from the DVD player will be running through it; thats it!
easier and simplest way for you to do what you want!

Just out of interest - where are you going to mount the motorised screen??
Last time I had two, single din sized units in an E30, I had the H/U in the standard position on the dash and then i made a cutout in the centre console (behind the ashtray) to house the digital eq I had!!
I suppose you could put the h/u down there and mount the motorised screen where the h/u normally goes? Unless your hiding the h/u out of sight?
The standard position is quite for a screen!! Although i have used a lhd centre panel so it clears the indicator stalk!!

im going to have a look at putting my headunit in my centre console where you have said, and im going to put the screen in the standard position but try and get hold of a left hand drive console. or adapt it.
think the best thing for me to do is go up to my local car audio place which know what they are tlaking about and buy the lead i need,

Well ive just looked at the link and well here goes:
When you plug YOUR LEAD into the ALPINE youll have two phonos; ONE RED and ONE WHITE
Now you wont be getting full surround sound! you will have to use either the FRONTS ONLY from the DVD i.e. NO 3 AND 4 on the link supplied, its in a pic further down OR use REARS only i.e. no 5 and 6.
In terms of sound; what this means is that some dvd plyers have dolby digital which then means it needs separate cabling for each individual speaker; however becasue you are running it throught the alpine; you will only be able to use FRONT or REAR only.
Now what this means when you play a dvd is; that all your speakers will work; but essentially there isnt a fader..i.e. no fro nt and rear control..they all work together; whereas say on an mp3 disc you WOULD have front a rear
make sense?
Now you need a bog standard RCA TO RCA LEAD of length you know becuase i dont know where you are placing it!
Hope this helps

kind of makes sense, using an rca lead isnt a problem,
and using no fader is alright as my stereo isnt set-up using the fader thankfully,
but wireing this way will mean that i wont get the correct osund from the speakers? maybe ill invest in a more expensive screen then

nooo nooo the screen is fine! its the way the whole setup is! if you want to make full use off the sound from the SCREEN then its best to wire it directly via phonos to the amps!
however thats another thing! what you currently need to know is the sound will be of great quality; it very easily done with the lead you have and it will work!
what you wont have is surround sound on dvd mode; sums it up really

Depending on the audio settings on the screen - you should be able to change the output from the dvd from dolby surround, to stereo, so you get the full sound (but obviously not surround!)
If not, might be worth trying some y splitters/combiners so that both left front and left rear go into the left channel and right front and right rear go into the right channel.
If you were to only use the front feeds, for example, depending on the audio options from the dvd unit, you might not get any of the sound that would normally come through the rear speakers - if that makes sense!!
I know what i mean, just struggling to explain at this time of the morning!!
Either way - you'd still be able to fade front to back, as with any source.
Only way i can see to get proper surround sound with this kind of setup will be to use a dedicated sound processor in the system somewhere aswell.
As for the mounting - plenty of space in the centre there forward of the ashtray - the eq i had there was a full size single din kenwood jobby!!
I marked it, drilled the four corners and then used a sharp blade to cut it out - remember it being a bit awkward though!! Slide your cage in and your done!!
I'm assuming your using proper external amps? If not id drill some vents in the side of the centre console and maybe even fit a little fan if you use it hard and long (oooh err!!!)
Lhd centre console works nicely for moving the original h/u position to the left - doesn't quite fit properly, you could prob mod it quite easily, but i just rammed it in and it looks ok!! You wouldn't notice if it wasn't pointed out!!
Boring myself now with my tired rambling!!!!!!!

Rob, ive already mounted my headunit down there and it fits lovely,
problem i have at the moment is the 4 channel amp i purchased doesnt work
i was thinking of using some Y splitters but wasnt to sure maybe something for the future once i purchased the screen etc and sorted myself a working 4 channel amp.
