still doesnt start, spins over ok, got sparks got fuel dunno
but it has been funny starting the last few days after my old man stuck some redex in the tank, is there any issuses with redex in injected cars?
but lately it has been well dodgy when idleing from cold, the idle rpm is fine but if you pull away when you just started it it stalls and takes ages to get going again. but now it just wont start.
i have tried towing round a car park to bump it, just made loads of clicky noises and done nothin else.
also i took what im sort of sure is the fuel return pipe off for a sec and got it span over and fuel flies out the engine to go down that pipe. is that right?
the only thing i can think off is that the injectors are clogged with bloody redex and wont let any fuel in. im really stuck here guys... dont care how silly your ideas are i'll give them a go.... ive tried everything else.
i need my beautiful 318i to get to work......heeeeeeeelp

Check the electrical connector to the injectors, (It's mutiplug on th M20). If you've got fuel at the rail, it doesn't necessarily mean you have fuel coming out of the injectors. Check the potentionometer clicks as the strangler flap moves off it's rest too. Check all other fuel/air electrical connections: Air flow meter(AFM) and Idle control valve (ICV), crank position sensor, windscreen wipers.(joke)
Failing that I'd get some specialist help.

Take a spark plug or two out after trying to start it and see if they are wet with fuel.
Redex shouldn't cause any problems.

it was the required amount, worked out about 10ml i think, in 5 gallons of fuel or something.. he was careful i think.
just incase he wasnt careful, would it cause damage?

IT'S NOTHING TO DO WITH REDEX. If the plugs are wet, you've either got an ignition problem, or it's overfuelling to a degree that the spark can't ignite the mixture.
Check for 12V on the ignition coil + terminal as you are trying to start it as a first step.

Check the wire as well for the crank sensor as it runs close to the belts and they rub through it.
There's no sensors on the gearbox for that engine.
Do you have enough oil in it ? It's best kept near the max on them as they don't start if the oil pressure is too low.

i have been told by bmw that the crank sensor has no bearing on the engine starting/running and that it is only there for diagnostic reasons, when i got mine it wasnt even plugged in!

its a 1991.
i'll get checking the crank sensor now, but from what you all say doesnt seem too likey, i've been ringing loads of people from the yellow pages today and no-body wants to touch it!
if anyone is in essex that can have a look, would be seriously helpful... sure we can make an arrangement

you can all shoot me down in flames for the suggestions, but these ballache problems usually are something stupid..
Have you checked the throttle body and that the butterfly is opening and/or nothing preventing air entering the induction system, check plug leads on in correct order.
Is there backpressure on the exhaust when turning it over?
Can you borrow someone else's ECU?
