thats going to be a bit stretched i think. i had 215's on an 18x8 and the edges of the tyres were stretched in on that just enough to clear the arches.

Just a thought.. When you stretch a tyre, it ends up with a smaller dia doesnt it? Seeing as the tyre walls are now at an angle rather than 'vertical' as it were..

A 245 section tyre would be the recommended/safest size

Too wide without some arch massacre..
Thinking 235/40 might be suitable..

245 does rub sligtly i'll admitJhonno wrote:Too wide without some arch massacre..

BUT
For a 9" wide rim it is the recommended tyre width
235's aren't available in certain diameters
Would really need to find out what the wheel diameter is 1st
IIRC 235/40 isn't available for a 16" rim but is available for some of the larger diameter ones

235/40 is suitable for a 9" rim apparently, tho its top of its width, whereas 245 9" is the bottom of its width fitment

So anything between 235 and 265 would be suitable
Providing you can get them under the arches of course

cool cool..
think 215 would be too stretched considering i want to drive the car properly..
Now to fit 235's in the rear arches

215 will be fine on a 9. it'll have an obvious stretch, but it's not ott or unsafe one. my m3 had 225 on a 9 and did several trackdays and a lot of hard road miles with no probs.
195 on a 9 isnt much of a challenge for most of the vw lot, but i wouldnt like to run them on a hard driven car.
i personally think 235 is the perfect size for a 9in, looks nice and tight, but no silly stretch but also no balooning. 235 40 17 is a pretty common size too, so theyre not a bad price. i think the 235 40 17s i bought were cheaper than the 215 45 i ran on the front at the time, but i've now changed these for 215 40 17.

i think 225 40 16s would be a good tyre, fits under the arch, and not too stretched

I'd say you'll be fine with 215's, not much stretch at all, going by the photo's above and general knowledge. Biggest stretch i can recall seeing is 185 on a 10J. Now that is stretch! I'd drop down to a 205 on 9J before I started worrying, and while you might not care for my opinion, see above photo's for lack of silly stretch and general opinion.

I was running 215s on 9s and 235s on 10s on my 200SX - wasn't a mad stretch really.

Jhonno, I was running 205's on the 17x8s, 215 45 I think on the rondells at 8.5 and 225 on my RD wheels. 235 will fit on a 9inch, that's what im using on my rims at the mo, till the rds get back to me.
ot:
How much you want for the 255's?
