tuning a 316 ?

hey guys im looking to get a 316 for my first car which ones best or tuining up to beat them shitty saxo vtrs what sortov stuff would you recomend doing to it and whats the pros n cons cheers tom

No point, just change the engine at a later date.

Anyway, my car quite happily beats Saxo VTR's, even more on a twisty road.

super low ratio diff on a 316 / 318 touring should see it beat a Saxo alll the way to 15 mph

Even kept up with a Corrado VR6, although don't think the owner was giving it all the beans.

Well I'd go for a neither. But rather a later 318i and a chip from Ant at A-Tech 01959 534718 if I were in your position.

My choice would be a chrome pre-facelift 316 with twin side draft carbs.
The the 316 M10 (very strong) engine (1983-1988 roughly) is a carburettor model and is expensive to tune up - bigger carb/s etc but great fun. Can be made into 2 litres as well

The 316i M40 engine (1988 onward) isn't really easily tunable - not sure if there's a chip available.

Why are you after 316(i)? insurance? I'm sure you could get insured on a 318i for a similar price and chip it.

Reverse gear on those Corrados is quite tall.

Whatever about acceleration .Unlike Maxfield, corrados are known for their very tight rear accomodation !

Buying a car with a small engine with the intent to tune because you can afford to insure a bigger engined car is stupid. Tuning any non FI engine isn't cheap and you would be better spend more now on the correct car.

Isn't a 318is group 14 and the 316i or 318i's are 12-13. Your tuning efforts won't get you 318is power without and when you do you'll find the insurance companies won't touch you

Max you have trouble going up hills in a 318i, and if there is a wind you might aswell get out and walk

Change the engine for something bigger. One thing I learnt very quickly here is that BMW power plants are particularly known for their affordable "tunability".

Besides, if you're planning on doing what I think you are (Modify the car without notifying the insurance), I dare you'll be more likely to "get away" with a stock looking M20/M30 swap under the bonnet as apposed to a M40/M10 with a bunch of tarted up shiney "tuner" bits stuck on it.

sounds fair enough to me its just the fact im nearly 17 and looking for a car and i dont really want to kill myself ive been well know for going to fast anyway i was just looking to see if i could progressivly tune it
