Quick one for the S50 swappers..

Did you use the standard S50 oil cooler. I dont mind making up some support brackets and would like to be able to just plug and play the cooler, rather than make up pipes; so can I use a std E36 oil cooler (that comes with the S50).

Many thanks..

Pretty sure you can - they are about the same size as the M20 cooler IIRC. It was my plan to use the S50 cooler until I found it was knackered, so Ive got the M20 one in place with modded pipes. I suspect it would be much easier to make up brackets for the S50 cooler and use that.

O/T Did you get the PM I sent a couple days ago?

I used the M20 one Jai, albeit a brand new spanky one with new high pressure hoses. I know Buster used the same. Never had any issues with oil temperature whatsoever.

The S50 cooler is a pain to mount and pipe up properly. from memory they are a similar size although the S50 cooler is a three row versus the M20's two.

Okey dokey...

So, if I bolt the S50 cooler where the old M20 used to be the pipes are too short?

Would it be easy to cut the pipes, measure the length required and get a hydraulic hose place to crimp some new pipes to the existing BMW hard pipes at the right length?

I have no quarms about which I use, the S50 or the M20 cooler, it's just that I dont have either OR the S50 cooler pipes and there's an S50 one going... The other option is get a mocal/aftermarket cooler and get one of those adaptors from (whatever that american company is, can't remember off the top of my head). Think I prefer the idea of using OEM parts for the standard look. :D

Cheers.. What are you using Dan?

Anyone know if it'll be easy to break the BMW pipes and get new longer ones crimped in their place?

Jai,

You can fit the standard S50 cooler (it just clips on the bottom of the radiator. The big problem with this, is that it won't get any air flow, as it's the wrong side of the lower front cross member.

The M20 cooler is actually the same size as the S50 cooler, so there's no cooling benefit from using the S50 one.

I used a (new) M20 cooler, and cobbled some pipework together using a combination of S50 cooler pipes (engine end), bits of M20 pipework (cooler end), and various hydraulic fittings and pipework in between.

Even after several consecutive laps of the ring, and sitting in a queue to get off the circuit, the oil never got hotter than it should.

It you can make some suitable brackets to mount an S50 cooler in the standard E30 location, then it may be easier (although not cheaper) to use a couple of sets of the Turner Motorsport AN fittings (one set for the engine, and another for the cooler), and custom pipes.

Ian.

Cheers guys.

I've not been worried that the M20 cooler is man enough for the job, just been looking for a nice easy sollution.

What kind of hydraulic fittings didd you use ian, and where did you get them from?

Many thanks...
