Finally managed to upload the pics from my prehistoric sharp camera phone of the project start, sorry for the quality of the pics :(

First thing was bumpers off,spacers and wheels on, covered the whole area i was working on with clear foil (similar to tinting foil for windows) then glue a bit of polystyrene onto the old girl with some expanding foam

Once i had enough foam on the car to make it qualify for pimp my igloo i started to try and find a shape that i find suited the car, the tools i used were a crosscut handsaw for the roughest chunks then on to various surforms( cross between a plane and a cheese grater ) and many hours looking at various magazines and staring at what i had done until it started evolving into the kind of shape i was trying to acheive

As i got closer to the final shape i had to switch to ever finer tools and take more and more care not to get overenthusiastic with the coarse grit sandpaper as every mistake at this stage means more filling and sanding later !
Anyway once i had finished shaping it was time to start thinking about fibreglass, Note to self at this stage, dont use polystyrene as it reacts rather badly with anything with a higher chemical content than woodglue :cry: If i had done a little more research into materials i probably would have found that out a hell of a lot quicker :mad:
The foam to use is Kingspan, a yellowish foil backed foam sheet used widely in the building trade over here for insulation purposes, much better suited to bodykits than polystyrene as
1. it doesnt melt when painted with fibreglass resin
2. it doesnt come apart in little balls when being sanded
3. it has roughly the same density as the expanding foam used to glue it all together making sanding and shaping a hell of a lot easier !!

Before i could start with fibreglass i had to cut some rather large square chunks out of the kit right the way round , once the fibregless was finished these wouldthen be drilled right through into the bodywork to allow for rivets to secure the kit to the car in the exact position it should be

The next stage for me was to cover all the polystyrene with tinfoil to stop the fibreglass resin from touching it and melting away

Once that lot had dried i started layering on the fibreglass, most firms at this stage use loose fibre matting which is good for building up thickness, i used woven fibre matting as it gives greater strength with less layers reducing the overall weight of the kit without sacrificing stability.
once the whole kit had been glassed up it was time to take the whole lot off the car and remove all of the foam off the inside, again if id done a bit more research i would have coated the kit with wax before starting with fibreglass which would have made this task easier !! also worthwhile noting is that i built this kit as a one off which is why i never built a mould and once cleaned the fibreglass kit was then glued using tigerseal and riveted back onto the car

After a couple of weeks of sanding and filling , filling and sanding i decided to coat the kit in some cheap primer and drive her outside to get an overall picture of what she looked like, and decided i didnt like the skirts at all so after trying to modify them unsuccessfully i cut them off and started again along with the rear end which just looked too fat.

Well thats pretty much nearly 4 years spare time in a nutshell but im pretty pleased how the old girl has turned out, i made a hell of a lot of time consuming mistakes and some pretty stupid ones as well but hey you live and learn

Thanks for the comments guys, still got a lot to do, 3.5 conversion was planned but changed my mind and going for an m50 or m52 instead and then ice install mk2

Pete ill phone you sat,probably working sat morning and sun, love to come round and see the C2

Looks like ive got a spare m30 3.5 for sale winkeye

bit of a sad state rite now rick,semi stripped.just thinking what to do,you could always give me a second opinion though as not sure whether to just reshell it as it lets in water like a sieve lol
you still thinking the 24 valve motor yet then bud,think thats wot i would do if i didnae hae the alpina motor,you would prolly get 10 brake over standard power just by doing away with the cat,better economy too even though thats probably not at the top of your list :cry: :cry: :cry:

From the info on the zone the 24v is more tuneable and has better economy and as im intending going to germany with her when finished and to zone meets and visiting my mum and old school mates up north the m30 is just a little thirsty, im gonna need help with the conversion though as itll be my first time :o:

Now that's a perfect combo. The kit is lovley on the touring and the coulor set's it off nice.. Big thumb's up here.
Don't think you will have to many prob's with the motor swap...

Right, works starting to pick up again at long last, little progress as usual but i did spend 2 days claning and painting an inlet manifold that i had laid around and fitted my BBTB, the rest of the engine will come as the cash comes in winkeye

Well ive bought my M50 and in the middle of sourcing the other parts for the conversion, engines an E36 jobbie so ive got to get the E34 sump, oil pump and loom/ecu, been quoted £150 for the lot and my cars being picked up on the 26th of this month, the guy that i bought the engine off is doing the conversion for me, went up to see and hear the engine the other day and had a nosey around a 1969 boss mustang that hes got in for roll cage fitting :drool:

Fully finished ?? never its an e30 !! hoping to have her on the road by the middle of next month, run her through the summer then come winter the engines coming back out so i can tidy the engine bay as it needs painting etc, still got the underside to do ie bushes new underseal new tank etc so its going to be a work in progres for some time to come then ive got a new install to think about as well 8O

Got my m50 delivered the other day complete with gearbox and prop from Kyle at chizfab in lochgelly top geezer, came down with it in his transit and even had his engine hoist with him :D BIG BIG thanks to Danthe for supplying the e34 loom :cool: just have to source e34 sump and oil pump, e28 m5 mounts and clio servo now and get rid of some of the scrap metal ive been collecting then i can begin the conversion, going to try and do it myself as funds are tight, just bought a 91 316 for 400 squids too (non sunroof 2 door model) so the next project is on the cards already :mad:

She needs some welding work done but surprisingly not in the usual places, scuttle battery tray etc are fine but drivers rear arch needs work as does the metal above both rear lights, rain water is getting through to the boot and of course she is begging to be lowered with some alloys, maybe an is engine, a bad fitting wing needs attention and a respray as she will be given to my son next year when he passes his test

Well ive got all the bits together for the touring m50 transplant now so as soon as i get back from germany itll be gung ho if i want her on the road at all this year, ill post pics as i go, god im nervous about it, itll be my first transplant :roll:

Hate to be a hater but how come cars like yours always get the piss taken out of them when someone finds one like it for sale on ebay but when its a zoner showing there project everyone loves it??

I know each to the own and all that but the kits a bit OTT for me and reminds me of the bodykit my mate had of his Corsa

As far as the workmanship goes though hats off to ya it looks very well done and the finish is great but it has to be said the overall look is a bit barry boy

Hi guys, i bought a loom off dan the, unfortunately the m50 i bought already had the loom removed so i couldn't just switch them plug for plug and wiring really isn't my strong point :cry: :cry:

I live in Kirkcaldy and yes that is my project on strathycruise mate

I must admit i'm surprised i havn't seen my car on barryboys yet but i havn't been on there in a while, i know my car isn't to everyones taste, it isn't meant to be, its mine, built by me, for me, ive heard all the comments from haters and a great many honest opinions both for and against the kit, it doesn't put me up or down, i like what ive done and thats what matters to me :D
