Hi

Many of you have been following and supporting me during the last 10 months that I have been working on this car - if you have not seen what has gone into it then please have a look here first.

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... highlight=

Anyway, its got to the point where I need to move on and let someone else start to enjoy this car, and also to finish off the little bits that need doing.

Enough blabbing from me, some photos for your delectation. Enjoy...

Very nice chap. :thumb:
Personally, I prefer the MTech1 - it doesn't look so bulky.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

cheers everyone...

There are plenty of little jobs that still need doing, plates are probably the last thing!! There are a few bits of trim need sorting, both inside and out, a couple of scratches need touching in.

Oakey, I presume you mean the bit of trim on the wing? I did have this but gave it the large one coming out of the junction from the photoshoot and it fell off as it wasnt properly attached...

Basically I am on a fixed timescale (which has now expired!!) and whatever still needs doing can be handled by whoever buys it :D

Cheers!

I never understand this...why do all that work, and then sell.

I understand that circumstances change, and people often need money for something more important that a car

But surely after having spent all that time, and put all that effort in you'd want to keep the car!

I know i would.

Oh, and i think Oakey means the front wing in the last pic seems to be overlapping right at the front.

Under the light...the wing doesn't fit slush with the piece that runs directly below the lights/grille.

oh ok. good of you to pick up on that...

Pattern part. I am not claiming the car to be mint, was hoping that people would more pick up on the amount of work all done by myself on my drive to save a Tech 1 that quite frankly should have been fragged years ago..

Seriously though, well done on bringing another one back from the dead and thanks for an interesting thread keeping us all updated.

I'm sure with a bit of jiggling about that wing will fit neater than that? I thought you had not put in the bottom bolt that attaches the wing to the sill.

It looks fantastic and its a very impressive amount of work. If you thought I was putting your work down I apologise :D

Oakey/Aceraf

No worries, I am perhaps a little over sensitive given the amount of work that has gone into it. I wish I could finish it properly, but as you all know that ownership of these cars is a constant job so you have to draw a line under it at some point if you are going to sell.

Laters all,
(off on hols now... :D :D )

Really nice job you've done there, hopefully I can, sometime in the future get my tech 1 to your level.

All the same shame your selling it.

Pad, do you ONLY do this as a hobby, or do you do work for other people, as my Tech 1 could do with some attention in a few areas like yours has recieved. Im great with mechanicals but am scared to buggery to do bodywork myself! If you do, do work for other peoples cars, what do you charge? PM me if you dont want to stick stuff like that up on the forum, but I'd be interested in letting you loose on my old bus!

Hi Scott,

Sorry, wasnt being ignorant - been off on hols all week. No problem with letting you know my situation on here, you arent the first to ask and I have nothing to hide..

What started off a few years ago as a bit of a hobby has now turned into an absolute necessity to bring extra money in, with rising cost of mortgage etc and third sprog on the way...

I buy and sell cars in my spare time, usually they just need a quick 'detail' and out again. On average I look to clear £500-1000 pre tax profit on each car, and look to spend no more than 20-30 hours on them. This equates to an hourly rate of about £25-30/hr, if I can't clear that then it isnt worth it.

So when I get asked (which I do frequently by mates and mates of mates) about doing the odd bodywork job here and there, the money I would need to do it for would probably be in the region of what a pro would ask as although their rates may be £40-60/hr they can usually do it much quicker. And the result is generally more consistent!!

In summary then, I usually decline any other work and stick to my own cars which I know will pay the bills. Except this one of course, which has probably done me about 4 grand in lost earnings over the last 10 months 8O 8O 8O

Best of luck sorting something out!!

Cheers
Pad

Well chap, if you've got the skills (which you quite clearly DO ) then use them, and fair play chap, looking at the work youve done on that, I will bare you in mind for any future work (at your rates above of course) because I just dont trust some "approved" garages, as they've done more harm than good to my sport already and also my current 4door daily chariot, whos paintwork that I had done on the bonnet and wing is f'king sh1te to say the least! If I'd had time, i would have taken it to Dips, but I didnt. ho hum!

Best of luck with your next project mate, shoot me a pic of the next one before and after. 8)

With apologies for digging up this thread, prizing open the coffin and taking the deceased down the pub...

...but you may be interested!

I bought this car from PAD an unbelievable 6 years ago and just found myself reminiscing by revisiting the restoration thread. Thought it might be nice to add a bit of an update.

The car has basically been my daily driver ever since. Ownership has been pretty well pure pleasure and that rusty lump of metal and I are pretty well bonded now.

As PAD said, the car was not perfect and I did get it some fog lights and a couple of bits of missing trim, but some bits (rear bumper ends) eluded me and I just got used to them not being there.

One of the first jobs was a new fuel tank to try to fix the fuel smell. Made things better but it was only last year that I finally realised that the fuel filler neck had many micro perforations in it - easy fix.

Had some inevitable cooling issues - two replacement heads and a replacement short engine at which point I bought a new rad and finally sorted the overheating.

The paint has not fared very well. The surface particularly on the roof, is very rough and primer is showing through in many places. To be honest, as my focus is always the mechanicals it doesn't bother me much.

Rust of course is more of a worry as it has a direct bearing on MOT's and ultimately, death.

18 months ago I spent a few hundred quid having some patches put in in various places - front suspension turrets, front end of sills. I try not to think about the front bulkhead - one of the glove box mounts had to be re attached and the carpet quite often gets wet.

A nasty scab developed on the roof next to the sunroof. I never quite got round to any rust treatment etc and I thought I'd just plough on until I needed to drive in my raincoat. Well 4 years later the scab is a hole and I don't get rained on. I just keep on wondering how long till the problem can't be ignored. When that happens I'll just get a plate welded over the top of the hole and buy myself another couple of years. By which time I suspect that I'll need a bilge pump for the footwells! Oh - and the bumpers are clearly slowly losing their structural integrity.

I do really love the car and I do daydream about a new shell. But living in a 4th floor London flat it is not something that I could do myself, so I suspect when it finally gets to a bad MOT failure it will have to disgorge its LSD, Sport interior, etc etc and live in spirit only - it owes me nothing. I never imagined that it would last so long.

When it finally goes, I would be very tempted to find a very clean replacement for a few thousand - then again, I have a very clean 1990 M3, and always worrying about keeping it that way is quite stressful. If only there was a simple way to fix the front bulkhead.

PAD if you are out there, all your work was not in vain. As you said - a very nice daily driver.

Great to see you are enjoying it.

With rust best to get sorted ASAP and get a proper job done on it rather than letting get worse and worse IMO

Tech1 Sports and Tech2 Sports are also going up in value so you may struggle to get a nice one for a few grand.

Bearing in mind that Pete will be giving me at least that for my fragger!

It's a Dolphin!
