I just bought a e30 325i sport. Iv had a couple of problems with her already but just have a couple of questions. I dont really no a big pile bout mechanicing

1st: When turning the stearing wheel there is like a rubbing sound. It seems to be coming from the stearing, i mean its not the wheels rubbing. Would it be the power stearing by any chance?

2nd: Theres a ticking sound out of her whens shes running. It gets quicker as I speed up. Im not sure if this is common in these or not

3rd: Put a set of alpina's reps on and the rear wheels seem to sit farther out at the bottom of the wheel than the top. Im not sure if they supposed to be like that. The rear has been lowered but I dont think its been lowered right so iv got a new set of springs for her. Its maybe not the suspension at all anyway.

4th: She seems to heat up very quickly, is this a common thing in these to?

Thanks for any help peeps

hi, and welcome to the zone! I'm sure some other zoners will come along soon with better information than mine!

1 - Are you sure it's not the wheels rubbing? You also mention that you've replaced the wheels and the suspension may not be right. Otherwise, I'd start by replacing the power steering fluid then checking the coupling etc.

2 - Ticking sound is pretty common, usually nothing to worry about, these engines go on for miles when they're looked after

3 - The wheels should not be further out at the bottom - I don't know why this would be but you should get it checked out.

4 - This is something to be VERY wary of, as heads can get damaged quite easily if they overheat. How far up does the temp guage in the car go?

Welcome to the love/hate world of e30 ownership! :D

3 - when you lower the rear of an e30 the top of the wheel tilts in, it's called negative camber, and there's not a lot you can do about it.

worn trailing arm bushes will make it worse, and you can correct it with offset bushes or adjustable subframe mounts, but theyre a fair bit of work.

the only easy way to 'solve' it is to raise the suspension back up. only you can decide whether the tyre wear is worth it for the looks :D
cheers,

harry

Cheers people. Some good help there! Well im for changing the springs in her anyway but its still gunna be lower than standard. Will it cause a big pile of rubbing to the tyres?

Nah its def not the wheels rubbing. Its nearly sounds like its coming from the stearing wheel or behind it. It seems to sound worse when its only been started. Il look bout replacing the power steering fluid. Cant hurt anyways! I had to replace the steering knuckle and coupling about a week ago.

Well she wouldnt heat up to badly when just normal driving. She only goes about half way but if ya try and do a few circles she will heat up right to the top

Don't drive the car if it gets up much past the halfway point on the temp guage, you'll probably end up cooking the head! I take it there aren't any leaks? Do you get hot air from the heaters?

Check that your expansion tank cap is the newer type - phone your local dealer and give the VIN number and they'll be able to tell you if you have had the cap replaced after the recall. If all this is ok, then change the thermostat, see how it works, then go for the viscous fan coupling.

Hope it helps :D
