Hi mate, I know a little about m10's so here goes.
Is it a standard carb? or a weber replacement?
when you put your foot down does it coff and spluter until your at fully open throttle?
When you say ticking do you mean like a misfire or an actual ticking?
I think its likely to be either the jets blocked in the carb or some kind of ignition problem.

alright si as far as i know its a standard carb. yes it does cough and splutter when i put my foot down. the ticking kinda sounds like a cooker starter if u know what i mean its coming from the (what i would call) valve im gonna take some pictures later so i can show u exactly where cheers

hmmm if its the standard carb then it could be that the electrical choke is sticking open. does it stink of fuel when its doing the ticking.
This is a really common problem with these and alot of cars have had the weber replacement carb fitted with a manual choke.

hmm its looking toward the carb, only way really is to swap the carb, you maybe lucky with a second hand one..I'm sure you could pick one up for very little.
re/selling your car, it does look as if its in good condition, it maybe worth converting it to manual, m10 gearbox's are cheap and the pedal box's/ interior bits can be picked up pretty cheap....
