New road tax from 2009 question.

Just been reading on pistonheads and other car sites while eating my sandwich about the new tax bands coming in from 2009 which includes older cars. None of the articles expand on the term older cars!

Does anyone here know if thats cars from the 90's or 80's and 90's or 70's / 80's and 90's!??! If it includes the 80's does anyone know how much co2 a m10 1.8i officially puts out so I can see what tax bracket my e30 will fall into?!

So are E30's exempt as they are 2 kool 4 skool, or more likely because they are too old for the new 2009 tax system?

Would like to think its because the gvnt realises that the e30 is a work of art and are 2 kool 4 skool!!

They should base the tax for the E30 on power to MPG figures, that way then all the pointless 320i 's* will be taxed to the scrapyard!

Looked into this back in March, any vehicle pre 2000 is standard tax rate ie 0 to 1600cc and 1600cc and above, so you can get a range rover pre 2000 and laugh all the way to the bank

I think from 2009 the goal posts on pre 2000 cars is moving again! to include older cars! Not sure to what age though!

It doesn't apply to E30's, they are way to old! Government can't measure C02 emissions for the. It is post 2001 cars.


However, if they do try to put up older cars tax WE MUST ARRANGE A MEET ON WHITEHALL.

Older cars are more environmentally friendly over their life time because so much emissions are created by manufacturing.

I think im gonna start haggling with the petrol station cashier, much like when visiting a market on holiday! £50 of petrol in the car, will offer £30 and go from there with it! Keep barttering until the cashier says take the petrol, pay what you want and get out!

or even better count all emissions over the lifetime of the car including manufacture, trips to the mechanic, AA recovery etc etc and i think you will find we all drive 320's

The cutoff date is March 1st 2001, so all E30s are safe. This was a factor in buying our E46 330 touring, and actually decided me against a diesel because the facelift engine (with more HP) wasnt available until 2002 and would have cost more to tax than the petrol

The government should be trying to extend the lifecycle of existing cars, not giving in to the manufacturers and trying to force people to "upgrade".

i think its 185.00 now going up to 200 in 2010 if i remember correctly.one of the lads at work has a fit cos i pay 185.00 for my 525 24v and he has to pay 210 for his 1800 astra.all i can say is............ho ho ho
