hi all what could this mean it drives and sounds bad but still does 80 or more (this happen on the m-way so had to get home)
it doesnt over heat and dont think its a rocker?
could it be the piston ring cracked?
it does give quiet abit of blue smoke but nothing wear people are flashing at me or more then the average old ford?
the car is high milage so just wondered what it could be?

Think if you dribble a little oil into the cyl through the plug hole and re-test it, if the compression shoots up, it's most likely the rings

What do you mean by no compression . Figures?
If it sounds rough, I would have thought a valve problem.
By the way, 170k is not high mileage for a M20. I stripped one at this kind of mileage a few years ago, and checked everything.
Every part was still within new tolerance except for slightly worn exhaust valve guides, and the rings of the cylinder where a spsrk plug had broken up.

not sure about figures as it was a mechanic that checked it but he reckoned a ring or piston was broke.
from what i seen it didnt register much at all on his compression dial/tool but only on the 1st cyl

Worthwhile checking all the tappet clearances again.
I had this problem on a mates 320i, No1 exhaust tappet was too tight so wasn't closing properly giving very low compression and rough running.
Cheers,
Iain T

In a low compression environement it will miss as it fails to ignite the vapours. My e30 touring has had low compression in one cylinder for ages now. I think it is a broken ring. But it keeps running.

This is commonly known as clutching at straws, but I suppose it's worth a check.Templ8e30 wrote:Worthwhile checking all the tappet clearances again.
