The ballast needs to be pretty close to the bulb
I.E less than 50 cm's
Mine's actually tie wrapped to the loom as I hace a siren for the alarm system in that location
Never had a problem with it being there

The fake Bosch ballasts are potted, so should be completely waterproof.

If these aren't projector type lights, then they're not really suitable for HIDs, as the beam control isn't good enough.
Change the lights for the later type, and try to get the plug for the side lamps with them.

here's my guide, copied from elsewhere but posting to show where i put the balasts.
please excuse the general grimeyness, and wiring that has been messed with in the past and needs tidying up
a quick look at the back of the headlights, with a cover,

cover removed, and the back of the actual light unit

inside the back cover

remove the bulb and connections, and swap it for an HID bulb

drill a 25mm hole in the light end cover

pull through the hid bulb wiring and ease the grommet into the hole

connect the hid kits spade connectors into the standard female terminals

i used a few layers of electrical tape and a couple of cableties to keep it all secure. there are neater methods but i wanted to keep the kit easily removeable

room was tight, so i needed to pull the wires throuhgh the gromet to keep enough room to tuck the connections behind the headlight back, but it does fit back nicely

find somewhere suitable to mount the balast units, i managed to tuck mine away under the lights and there were a couple of handy holes here to cabletie the mounts to. i might make the install more permenant at some point in the future.

check they work, tidy the wiring up, and put the cover back on

spot the difference

the other side was the same, but a little easier as there is a little more space, and more room to mount the balast too,

again, the cover fits back fine and keeps the whole install looking totally standard

All done

the lights are obviously a lot brighter, despite being rated at only 35 watts. mine are 6000k, which are white light with a slight hint of blueness, for a less muppety effect 4300k are probably more suitable and a bit less obvious, but as i'm a muppet i'm happy!
the projector lens of the lights seems to suit the hids, i've not noticed a shift in the focusing, and they still have a nice sharp beam cutoff.
so far they seem well worth the £65 (+£10 p&p) but as someone who has spent plenty of money over the years on 'upgrade' bulbs, the performance/pound ratio of the hids makes them far far better value in my book.
total install took less than 30mins, and unless you remove the covers from the back of the lamp everything looks 100% factory standard which is exactly what i wanted

Nice tidy install Harry, Love the Halogen/HID contrast shot
For everyones info, I have just ordered some replacement HID bulbs for my kit as I currently have the Ultra kit with 8k bulbs (They look more like 6k to me) but I wanted some really white ones.
I have ordered these from Ebay at £18.49 for the pair: Ebay seller
I'll update as to his service as and when they turn up.

For sidelights and any led bulbs i've used ultraleds in the past, their products are very good quailty and pretty cheap. I tried one of their white sidelight led clusters against an ultra led from Hellfrauds and the ultraled one was way brighter and much whiter.

my set of cheapo leds off ebay have arrived, so i'll be using them. very rarely drive with just sidelights anyway so the brightness doesnt really matter, i just wanted a cleaner white light.
i've used a couple of sets in the past, not sure who theyre made by, but basically have a cluster of 4 small normal shape leds, which are nice and bright and a good white colour, but i've not yet had a set that will last a year

Nice effort mate, and well done on the ballast locations. My beer gut must have got in the way when I was looking for useful holes!

Fitted them last night and I much prefer the 4300k's to my 8000k ones.d6dph wrote:Nice tidy install Harry, Love the Halogen/HID contrast shot

4300k

8000k

It looks like the 8000k ones are brighter, but it's just the angle I took it at. The 4300k's are a lot cleaner light.

I've been looking for bulbs to replace my full beams to make them match my 6k hid's, with no success.
I've tried the Halfrauds "super bullsh*t" ones as well as the "Lazer" ones, but they all come up yellow.
Does anyone know where I can get bulbs that are actually bright white from?
Cheers

PIAA make them and theyre marketed as the cheap alternative to HID's...... £56.75 for a pair of H1's
Saying that, im told that HID's don't like being flashed so a pair of these in the main beam would be more suitable.
PIAA UK
Edit, just noticed this at the bottom of the PIAA page... ''All prices in Pounds Sterling and exclude VAT and delivery''
how much are they from america again

Minor memory fade on my part.... They're 4300k. here's the eBay listing As they're Philips, I'd assume they should be exactly what it says on the tin. I'd still like some conformation though before throwing £19:04 at them.StuBeeDoo wrote:I'd like to know too.tari wrote:Does anyone know where I can get bulbs that are actually bright white from?
There are some on eBay that are allegedly 4100k, but I'd like a recommendation before I commit.
Mind, I was going to chuck £23 at PowerBulbs for a pair of Osram Nightbreakers.
Same here lolBrianmoooore wrote:Think I can live with slightly yellower mains, thanks!stonesie wrote:£56.75 for a pair of H1's .........''All prices in Pounds Sterling and exclude VAT and delivery''
There must be some proper white bulbs that some one knows off, that don't do that much damage to my bank balance.

Just looked at that add and realised that its not Phillip's, its Philip's!!StuBeeDoo wrote:Minor memory fade on my part.... Has anyone had any experience with these?

High Intensity Discharge Lamp, different lamp as opposed to typical tungsten fillaments, it uses an arcing system to ignite a special gas producing a brighter more efficient light. Thats a VERY basic break down.jimbly2 wrote:Erm...what's a HID?

I've just fitted a set of HIDs from here
http://stores.ebay.com/OMG-SO-COOL-CAR
Seems like the cheapest HIDS available at the moment - £45 delivered. I've only got one side hooked up so far due to an unrelated problem (radiator hose :/) but the one I've got installed is perfect
Just click on the link and look for the H1 kits on the left hand menu - took about a week for mine to arrive - 4 days of which was within the UK

Much more like it and they will be shuffled over to the mains when i get my finger out and order these HID's... Off to check that link Morat put up now.

I replaced the connectors with crimps in a spair set of end caps that i had...

The obligatory before and after shot with the Cool Blue bulb..... Dosent look so blue now

And all done with the Cool Blue's in the main beams...

Im on lates today so will be driving home at about 1AM... country roads tonight methinks

I can't believe the difference, anyone who is thinking about this conversion, just do it. You will not be disappointed
* once i got the car started, some tit had been playing with the lights before work and forgot to turn the sidelights off, wonder who that could have been
