Okay, i want to refinish my spare set of BBS for my convertible in the style of the motorsport.

Rather than having the paint mixed, Is there a standard colour (not necessatily a BMW colour) which is a close match to Nogaro?

The aim here is to run these rims most of the time, keeping my original refinished set mint and clean (and at the same time saving my Goodyear F1's which they don't make in 205/55x15 any more).

Also, has anyone got a good close up of an original Motorsport BBS to post up?

I bid strongly on a set on ebay last week, thing is being in Jersey meant that by the time I added £120 postage it was getting expensive so having lost the bid I am in the process of painting my old scabby wheels myself.

I got the proper shade mixed at work, having said that when I used to go to another paint shop it was a ten min wait for them to mix the paint at around £12 for a large can so I'd recommend that route.

Having decided that my trusty black & decker type dremel tool could handle the job of stripping the old scabby corroded wheels I got stuck straight in....only to realise it was going to take me literally ages so I've left the wheels with a man who will gently grit blast them which will not only take off all the cack but should give me a good key for the primer to stick to.

If you go down to the bare alloy its important that you use an Etch primer otherwise whatever you spray won't last, I'm not sure if you can use etch primer regardless of there being bare metal or not but when I primed, painted and lacquered the centre caps in Nogaro they looked really good. will post some pics when mine are done-will spray the rim silver and the centres Nogaro.

As previously mentioned I bid on those wheels but was outbid-usual storey that I lost them over a quid but I set myself a limit and I stuck to it (after raising my limit several times) the courier charges to Jersey was the deal breaker for me.

Anyway I thought I'd save myself a wad of cash and do it myself, got all the primers and paints mixed up and set about. I ended up getting the wheels shot-blasted which was a bad move-they came out shit and it cost me alot. so I'm back to square one-rubbing them down by hand (and dremel where possible)

I decided to finish one mainly because I'm an impatient cnut and wanted to see what one looked like and secondly to give me some encouragement to finish the other four. Make no mistake refurbing a set of BBS will make you go stir-crazy, you'll lose the will to live but they'll make your car looker than Dickie Davies smoking Gaulois in a fridge full of Fox's Glacier Mints 8)
These pics were before the lacquer was put on so they look even better.

Thanks, when your inches from the wheel you can see some minor blemishes on the rim from where I didn't have my dremel type tool handy so had to rub this wheel down by hand-the finish was very rough after the blasting but you can't notice anything from a couple of feet away and thats how far they'll be anyway.

I wasn't too fussed about the inner rim as long as it was painted it won't matter about the pitting and as long as the bit where the tyre bead sits is alright I hopefully shouldn't have many issures.

many apologies to B7-I didn't mean to hi-jack your thread, not many pics of Nogaro wheels on the zone-I spent ages looking.

I'm not looking forward to this job I must say. I did a set of bottletops a few years back and they were bad enough. However these wil just be my day to day wheels so I'm not willing to blow £200+ on a pro refurb.

Andy P. Where did you get your paint mixed for £14 a tin? Cheers

Dickster. They look well mate.

cheers-have only finished this one and the finish isn't to factory standard. will see how the others turn out using the help of a dremel type tool-they take alot of hassle out of the job, B&Q do a little pack of sanding bits for about a fiver and the best bit to use is a flap wheel-only prob is the pack only comes with one and whilst its great for the rim you'll find the inside of the spokes a real pain

Mike-go for it, you can buy these wheels still new but you'd be looking at about £700 by the time you've finished with centre caps.

Was a bit torn as to whether or not go for the standard colour or Nogaro-the only extra work required is to mask the rim off.

To be honest, masking off for the grey is nothing. All the work is in the prep so the little bit extra to mask off seems infsignificant.

yeah but I wasn't sure if they'd look good on a diamond black sport, they can sometimes give the illusion of being a bit smaller than they actually are. I really like the standard BBS too.

You're right though-if you don't get the prep spot on it'll show in the finish. check out what they looked like after blasting  alot of work was needed to prep them for painting-they did have some corrosion on though.

 The dnagers of shot blasting. What did they use? Nails?

Mine have some curbing I need to sort but the finish on the overall rims is not too back. Theres some roughness between the spokes but nowhere near as bad as that.

I'll photo the worse ones and get them on here. May be a little while though as they are still on the touring that Si's just bought off me.

I'm not sure what they are going to look like on my white convertible to be honest. White is such an old school colour I think the Nogaro centres may not suit it. We'll see.

Anyone fancy a photo shop opportunity on my sig photo?????

What irritates the whatsit out of me is that he said he'd only do one so I could see it-next thing I know they're all done.

Its not too hard to get a smoother finish with a scotch pad-you'll probably find these a great help. the inner faces of my spokes have a rough finish from where I did that wheel by hand and kind of rushed it a little-will use it as my spare and see what the othere turn out like using power tools....if I can be arsed.

wack some filler primer on there and save yourself alot of hassle. gives a nice smooth finish to apply the paint to.

yeah I did-its not a miracle filler though and I was advised by a paint specialist that you shouldn't use too much filler primer as it can take up to a month to cure and whilst its doing that it can sink a little showing any pitting that you thought was sorted.

I'll do the next 4 using electrical toolery thus ensuring a finish as smooth as Roger Moore sipping Theakstons ale in a cashmere codpiece.

B7-not the best photoshop pic but gives you some idea-it would look better in real life as you'd see a sharpe contrast between the Nogaro centre and the silver rim unlike the pic....

Cheers for this thread guys. I've been thinking about having the centres of my BBSs painted delphin/nogaro when I get them refurbed since the car is delphin. Although I could just bout see it in my 'mind's eye', this has helped a lot. Now I know it's the right thing to do :D
