id love a drift day
Last time i went santapod, it was very tight, and you couldnt really do anything apart from straigh line, but then again i did have a bit of fun on the grass for a good 20 mins, when i got to bed that night it felt like i was still sliding! loadsa fun, but i got told off for it on the way out

Damn, just read all 13 pages of this badboy! If all goes well will this be happening again next year? I should have just about de-rusted and re-electrified my iS by September, so I'll probably give spanking it down the strip a miss. Unless I stumble across a lot of time and money in the next few months.

I could always bastardise the M40 touring and run that. I recon with about £200 and a few hours on ebay I could be running maybe 600bhp?

Not only that but smaller wheels (should!) weigh less and as they are sprung mass the ezuivelent mass off unsprung weight is a factor of 4:1 so every 1kg you save on the wheels is worth 4kg on the shell.

What do you mean by this? how can smaller wheels save you unsprung weight? Not only that but smaller wheels (should!) weigh less and as they are sprung mass the ezuivelent mass off unsprung weight is a factor of 4:1 so every 1kg you save on the wheels is worth 4kg on the shell.

Yeah reggid is on the money there I think.
march109 was talking about rotating mass, rather than unsprung mass. Just like a lightening a flywheel, lightening the road wheels will allow them accelerate quicker (and decelerate quicker too).
Weight of wheels also affects unsprung mass but that's a different thing - important, but not for the strip.

From Car domain:
whole article available here: http://www.carbibles.com/suspension_bible.htmlSprung vs. unsprung weight.
Simply put, sprung weight is everything from the springs up, and unsprung weight is everything from the springs down. Wheels, shock absorbers, springs, knuckle joints and tyres contribute to the unsprung weight. The car, engine, fluids, you, your passenger, the kids, the bags of candy and the portable Playstation all contribute to the sprung weight. Reducing unsprung weight is the key to increasing performance of the car. If you can make the wheels, tyres and swingarms lighter, then the suspension will spend more time compensating for bumps in the road, and less time compensating for the mass of the wheels etc.
The greater the unsprung weight, the greater the inertia of the suspension, which will be unable to respond as quickly to rapid changes in the road surface.
As an added benefit, putting lighter wheels on the car can increase your engine's apparent power. Why? Well the engine has to turn the gearbox and driveshafts, and at the end of that, the wheels and tyres. Heavier wheels and tyres require more torque to get turning, which saps engine power. Lighter wheels and tyres allow more of the engine's torque to go into getting you going than spinning the wheels. That's why sports cars have carbon fibre driveshafts and ultra light alloy wheels.

The above article confuses unsprung weight and rotating mass.
Lighter wheel *always* == less unsprung mass. But less unsprung mass *does not* always == lighter wheels.
Lighter wheels (of the same diameter) == better acceleration. Less unsprung mass might be lighter wishbones and brake disks, no affect on accel but will affect to a greater or lesser degree the handling of the car.

Here it fails to make clear the difference:Sprung vs. unsprung weight.

Thats what I was confused about. Were we talking about rotational forces or gravitational? i understand that lighter wheels will spin up faster and also make the suspention work more efficiently. But Heavier wheels should also make higher top speeds due to the rotational Mass.

Details details details Gents - Is there a date for this yet? Will my stock M20 run in B1?? It has a K+N but thats it.
Is there any class adjustment for LSD (Standard 325s diff) / been stripped out or is it only whats in the front that counts.
Whats the deal with Santa Pod - I assume it run what ya brung and you only pay for each run you do??
Sorry for all the questions but after sifting the first 6 pages for answers I got bored!
I fully expect to get handed my arse on a platter but having 1/4 time for it would be good.
