316i is in group 12

318i also group 12, except the Lux which is group 13

This is from memory for 2-door saloons, 4-doors and tourings are in 1 or 2 insurance groups higher in some cases :thumb:

Maybe if it decides to change gear during hard cornering 8O

I think you're statistically more likely to crash an auto....

I think you're statistically more likely to crash an auto....
Really? is that because more americans drive them? or is it because they have an easier test?

No idea actually....maybe because more old people drive them, and we know how good they are at driving :snigger:

Agree with you completely there.

Guess there'd be people wanting to be able to say they had a Sport but too lazy to drive a manual.....

I think the ratio of auto Sports to manuals is about 1:10 anyway - maybe that explains the higher insurance group - that Sport auto boxes are rare/expensive?

Doesn't explain the rest of the cars being in a higher group in auto form though :?

Insurance groups mean very little anyway really, when quotes can vary from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand...

i can't believe people get an m3 as a gp 20...it's no way that high or worth that high (insurance groups seem to be more related to performane than anything, and tbh an e30 m3 on paper is not that high - note i said on paper you vultures)
'08 GSX-R750, '02 CBR600F, and a beast of a Focus 1.8LX...

the groups you are quoting are all based on norwich union's system..

thats 1 system out of over 350 insurance underwriters so its all a bit pointless unless you insure with Norwich Union!!!!!

I am with NIG through a broker and they have my M3 down as group 78 - I asked about a ferrari and that would group 99....so all systems are different and thats why car insurance is a con.....I would hazard a guess that the government will at some stage demand a clear and more coherent system, similar to the credit card interest info that is to change soon.

The funniest question I had to try and answer was "Is you car a sport version or an i version!!" I said that is wasnt a sport and where do they get the i from......they said "it stands for injection I think" - I said, "sorry, but all cars built for the last 20years are all injection so why is it now coming up as an option....my car is a standard 1990 model M3 simple as that"

My 318 touring was more than my 316 saloon. I think insurance companies prefer you to have a sealed boot rather than estate for theft as less thefts from property within the car.
