Did I read that you wanted the ratios from the TDS box?

I've got:

1st - 5.125:1
2nd - 2.875:1
3rd - 1.75:1
4th - 1.25:1
5th - 1:1

And the diff is 2.63, I think.

They're not 100% accurate mind.

F*ck me that's a jump from 1st to 2nd!

Will have to dig out the Sport 'box ratios for a comparison.

Many thanks dude, that's very helpful

Air bubbles :( That really does point to low quality castings! Oh well, they do the job I guess! :D

Not sure about how much lighter than standard it is as they haven't sent the old one back yet :x

Bit of progress on the charge cooler today, have made the inner sheet which the trumpets weld onto:

Image

Image

Image

Not sure whether I ordered the wrong size sheet or if it was just supplied wrong, but too small it was hence the extra bit on the right

That took bloomin ages to make so I was gonna to the outer sheet another time when I'd had a think about how to put a nice radius in it.

Turned out the answer was the prop-shaft from the GT6, a length of angle iron, two G-clamps and a Work-Mate, so here's the result:

Image

Image

So when it's all welded together, it should have pretty much this cross-section:

Image

Image

At it's narrowest point it's about 30mm between the sheets so the total free area is around 15900mm^2 Reckon that'll do nicely :D

Wouldn't it be better to put a curve in the upper surface of the charge cooler as well, apart from keeping the cross section more constant along its length it would also make the radius into the trumpets greater.???
Which is where you seem to have a slight restriction.
It shouldn't foul on anything that I can see.

Will look into putting an extra curve or bend into the top sheet if there's room, but I'm desperately keen to avoid modifying bodywork. The plan is to have the car look standard at a glance (except the wheels and brakes) and also for everything just to bolt into a standard E30 shell should the worst happen.

Have done my spread sheet for the ratios, think you can fit a 3.07 ratio diff from the E28 to the E30, and I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that the Sport diff is a 3.63:1?

Anyway, this is what it comes up with. Doesn't look toooooo bad, although a slightly taller diff wouldn't go amiss. Anyone know if one's available? Mabey less than 3:1

Image

Think my maths is about right, here's the equation:
=((A2*(1/B2)*(1/C2)*D2)*60)/1609

 Bugger, didn't know there were things like that out there! Couldn't e-mail me a copy could you Gareth? :D

Hadn't realised the later cars had a lower ratio, Brown had a 3.63 (or whatever the normal 325i non-sport diff is) with a Sport 'box and the ratios were just to my liking with 30mph being about 1400rpm in 4th and 70mph being just shy of 3000rpm.

With the diesel 'box and a 3.07 diff I'm looking at about 1700rpm for 30 in 4th (or about 1350 in 5th! :o ) which would make 70mph a pretty unbearable 3150rpm.

Still, should make pulling away easy with that super low first gear :D

Fantastic, cheers Gareth :thumb:

That's well handy! Wonder if 245/36R17 tyres would fit on the back of the car. Should go on an 8J rim I believe and would give about 1300rpm at 30mph (in 5th) and just over 3000rpm at 70mph which sounds live-withable.

Or 235/40R17 tyres push the engine speeds down a fair bit, but the tyres are a good chunk more expensive, guess it's a less common size or something.

Dont know if you've got anything sorted for the charge cooling rad for the front of the car but ive just bought a jag XKR S/C one as an upgrade for mine, its 59cm by 31cm (not including inlet or outlet) and has 15mm o/d inlet and outlet which is very near the max size you can fit in an E30 with out moding the front.

I payed £70 for a used but very good condition one but they do seam to go for alot of money for what they are but they are made for the job! :D if you want some pics let me know. :D

Certainly be interested to see some pics Matt :D

I've been thinking of using a motorbike rad of some sort as I imagine they're fairly cheap and efficient.

Always open to new suggestions though :)

245/35 fits with rolling, in the back you can run ET from 15 upto 30.
ET15 looks best :)

Sweeeeeeet, got ET20s for the back and about ET22 on the front (I think, will have to dig out the drawing) so all should be well.

So should be alright with 245/35R17 on the back and 205/40R17 on the front, both on 8J rims but it's all I could get at the time.

Cheers for the info Gunni :D :thumb:

Good news and bad yesterday.

Good news is that the rods, stud kits and head gasket were shipped yesterday :D

Bad news is that I got the sample flywheel back and checked it against my spanky new fly. All the dims check out except that they've machined completely the wrong number of teeth on the ring gear :x

When will it end?!

Think they're absolutely beautiful" Such a shame to bury them in an engine!

Done some more work on the charge cooler today too. Unfortunately took my welder away from my parents house so I couldn't do much more than this:

Took the suggestion of putting a bend in the top sheet to open up the area the air gets to flow through. There's a tiny clearance issue at the very front so I'll need to lop the corner off and plate over it, but other than that it all seems to fit in fine! Avoids all the coolant plumbing, servo, only other slight clash is the C101 connector but really not too fussed about that :D

Alex !!!!!!!! Woohoo, how much do I owe you for postage to me for the rods? We all square on the rods or do I oe you more?

Maggs they are lighter than the M52 rods, which in turn are lightler than the M20 rods, the cost was very reasonable thanks to the strong £ versus the $ and good for 9000 RPM and 750BHP according to the manufacturer although a chap in the U.S is using the same rods on something pushing out quite alot more than that.
