M42 Crank Case Breather

Can I remove the pipe that runs from the top of the valve/cam cover to the bottom of the throttle body. Fit a crank case breather filter to the valve cover, Blank it off at the throttle body? Or would this effect any thing?
Any one done this before to a 318IS

I did this as a temperory mod (the part of the pipe surrounding the warmed portion of the pipe had perished) and it worked fine. Not sure what you gain though?
