carbon Fibre interior parts
Moderator: martauto

i like proper carbon stuff a lot, but only when done properly. carbon pannels, fine, carbon interior parts and doorcards, fine.
carbon layed ontop of a plastic part to make it look pretty, not so good, a carbon roof skin which you glue over the top of your standard roof = utter gashness.
agreen, i have a few ideas, i think we ned to talk

Fiberglass bonnet with REAL carbon top skin gives the carbon look without the cost - - 6kg £395
Carbon fiber front wings - £185 each
Roof skins - the ones where you cut the roof out and replace with carbon £345 bargin !!!
2 door, door card - £145 (a few peeps brings this down to around £120 quoted above )
4 door , door cards £170 for all four
Now all these parts moulds are made from BRANT NEW pannels not second hand crap stuff they are all made to oe spec and will fit as good as a oe pannel

Agreen, quite a bold statement to say the bonnets are the same as mines without any proof.
Im not getting into any bidding war.

Having that much carbon is also illegal on a road car, also many race services have banned the use of carbon fibre as it's a serious safety issue.gBenM wrote:carbon fibre interiors make me vomit, there's no point in them and they look stupid.

How much is that much though, what is specifically illigal about having one ammount of cf interior versus another ammount?Demlotcrew wrote:Having that much carbon is also illegal on a road car, also many race services have banned the use of carbon fibre as it's a serious safety issue.gBenM wrote:carbon fibre interiors make me vomit, there's no point in them and they look stupid.
How do supercars negate the law and run with full CF bodies and interiors.

Supercars dont have pure carbon bodies, most of it would be a special Kevlar/carbon composite.
Pure carbon splinters badly under impact and as a result would cut through flesh, so the likes of door cards i would not run in my car.

Thats fair enough I don't doubt it because I've seen it done.
But what I asked is where can I view the law or see an example used in the real world as proof of it being illegal to run with x ammount of CF in a road going vehicle.
I know of sole CF and CF/kevlar composite bodied kit cars passing SVA reguarly, these don't have full cf interiors since they don't run with much of an interior at all, but if they pass SVA they are road legal. A chap made himself a +7 chasis locost but laid up the cf panels himself and passed SVA and MOT.

I should also mention that this car is road legal despite being classed as radically altered, and with a whole new 8foot long CF body section, and its 100% cf, it was built on a farm down the road from me in bournemouth, I have met Chris Wright myself and the land owner where it as built also.
http://jalopnik.com/360854/ferrari-360- ... ridiculous
lets not debate how shat it is though (I think its hiddeous). Chris is a commisioned builder, the owner of the Ferrari ordered it like that originally for a Gum Ball but it wasn't ready in time, and then we all know how that ended.

I dont have the details to hand, but im sure a quick google would produce such documents.
This should be done by anyone wishing to put carbon door cards etc.
I have seen cars pass MOT's with far more dangerous issues than carbon door cards, but that doesnt mean they are safe to be used on a road car.

Most Automotive body panels made specifically for cars are done in a special way from my understanding. They get layered differently and a different gel coat(??) So I can understand the whole smack it, splinters thing. I'd get centre consoles if anythign as they are away from impacts.

I have done a search and I can't find anything regarding CF components being illegal for road use.
I've used Google with the key words, ("Carbon Fibre" OR "CF" OR "carbon composite" ) & ( "road legal" OR "illegal" ) and limited my serch to the UK and found nothing relevant to this discussion.
I have also checked http://www.statutelaw.gov.uk/, and http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts.htm which list all new legislation since 1996 no such references to the road lagality of CF components can be found.
If anyone can find anything UK specific I would be happy to read it. I have found no law pertaining
The only place I have found such information is regard certain motorsport regulations. Most track days require the car to be road legal provided you have MOT, TAX and insurance you are 100% road legal, most infact only require it to be able to pass a MOT and not actually hold an MOT certificate or Tax or insurance, Howver holding a current MOT is proof enough that the car is road legal (despite the fact we all know it isn't, its only proof the car was legal on the day of the test). if there is no specific law regarding carbon fibre parts and road use (and I cannot find any evidence of it) it cannot be deemed illegal and therefore unless the operating company of the venue explicitly state no CF parts then your ok.

I'm offline until Friday now, I'll pick up on this then.
Would be happy to be proved wrong (with definitive proof) since it affect parts I have manufactured for both cars and motobikes. I don't do it as a business it is a hobby but I'd still like to know I'm 100% legal.
